playing the other day, one of the opposition sliced his tee shot into some trees bordering the course on 13. the ball was found and was well and truly unplayable. any drop could only be taken nearer the hole and going back keeping the flag in line with where the ball was would have meant going out of bounds.

What would the correct action have been had it been a comp, back to the tee?

It was a better ball game so he just picked up and was out the hole.

just got us wondering what was the correct ruling?

The ball was unplayable.
So just look at the options, you know 2 of them weren't viable so just take what remains.

so back to the tee was correct?

What if you had already played a provisional from the tee, and found the original ball, and had this situation, would you still have to go to the tee again or play the prov?

Back to the tee I'm afraid. Once the original ball is found the provisional is out of the equation.

This is my most frustrating rule in the whole of golf. The shameful and painful walk back to the tee to be scowled at by the group behind. what a complete waste of time. So much for speeding the game up. If they ever released an amateur set of rules this needs to go. Pro's have hundreds of people looking for their balls. This just annoys everyone - the people behind most importantly. Just take 2 shot penalty one for distance and one for the penalty and keep the pace of play up.

Could you not drop the ball, under the rules, and then declare it unplayable again and re-drop it again under penalty and so on until it was playable?

I don't think so Clive, taking you back keeping the flag in line was straight OOB.. They have put a rabbit proof fence in the end of last year and this is about the only place on the course you would be anywhere near that.

all hypothetical and on the normal course you could go back and have a drop it was just because of the winter green

Of course as soon as you realised that you have to go back to the tee and there is a group there waiting - you wave that group through. No time wasted :)

Plenty of time wasted actually..
Absolutely, call the group behind through, but there's a minute or two back to the tee, another couple of 3 as the group play their 2nd shots, then another minute or two while you play and walk back to where you began from...
If playing the provisional was allowed, pace of play would be continued.

Perhaps golf should be like tennis, where you get two goes at serving? Take two tee shots and disregard the worst one! Only kidding folks, but that is what this idea amounts to! Alternatively only play greensomes! 😀

Or maybe like European Union votes - keep having goes until you get it right!! :whoo:

If you have played a provisional and when you get near you believe your ball is in big trouble but findable, just don't look and play the provisional.

But really, how often does this happen to you? I referee and play scores of games in a season and probably see the long walk for this reason once a year if at all.

Probably only 4 times in my life - so you are right - I'm just saying its a horrible rule. One of the only ones that really frustrates me

Don't really get the logic there - the pace of play is not slowed as the group behind get to play - they would not have to wait any longer than they would have had to wait - and if they wave the player who has walked back to play up as soon as he is back to the tee - all that happens is that the groups swap places.

Sometimes, if the errant player has a long walk back to the tee, it is often a good idea to let his fellow competitors play their second shots immediately after the following group have played their first and are walking forwards. Or, depending on the walk, get his FCs to play their seconds as he is walking back.

The errant player can then drive as soon as the second group have cleared and immediately go forward to play his second. His FCs having already done that.

Could just watch where the balls goes having just hit it, and tee another without saying anything. Still in play albeit with the penalty, but no issues with holding anyone up.
