Following on from some comments in the "Worst course" thread, I wonder which town can lay claim to having the worst courses.

My home town, Southend-on-Sea (Essex), by virtue of geography, poverty, history and anything else ending in y, despite having a population of 175,000, has pretty meagre pickings.

Go on lads - do your worst!

Thorpe hall isn't bad and Orsett is only just down the road.

I am very near to you and as a pay an play golfer i think we are spoilt for choice in this area . Ok we do not have any top drawer courses , but within a 30 minute drive i could play a different course every week for 3 months . At the value end Belfairs is no pushover , the short course at Rayleigh is in its best condition for 10 years , the short course at Three Rivers is a lovely course , as is Cranham . With many courses in between , at the higher end Ballards Gore , the Rayleigh club , Three Rivers (long course), Langdon hills , Channells ,
I think we are in a great area for choice , you just need to be a bit selective for winter golf as a lot of courses do suffer when its very wet , but thats because every where is on clay .

And Thorndon Park - a classic Harry Colt course - is only about 20 miles (40 mins) away.

Essex isn't blessed with many top quality courses, but there is certainly plenty in the 'affordable' range that are still decent challenges.

What are you talking about max distance from the town/city centre? Hull must be a contender, Its at least 30 mins to get to a decent course on the edge of the city.

Lincoln has 2 very average courses in the city boundary but 30 mins plus drive away you have Torksey, Newark, Woodhall etc.

Belfairs, Southend on Sea Golf Club, has to be one of the best "munis" out there. Obviously conditioning isn't the best but layout, back 9 especially , is superb. Thorpe Hall is decent too . Ballards and Rayleigh Club (or whatever it is called now) are a bit joe average but in no means would i say Southend is poor.

Wigan is not well served TBH. We have some nice courses that just don't handle water too well due to the type of soil we have. Because they all suffer the same fate, the price doesn't really reflect the standard of course, with £800 being an average yearly price.

What makes it worse, is that if you drive another 15 minutes you hit the joys of the Southport coast, the Cheshire courses or the North Manchester heathland courses.. Bah humbug..
