As an ex-cricketer, you always look at your skipper to lead or set the pace. So these days everytime Cook has a bad day in office, the media is at his throat.

Golf (club) captain seems to be a slightly different game. I know a skipper - a lovely guy who plays off 22. Also another work colleague from oop north who is the vice captain of his club and plays off 18.

So what are the qualities you look for in your club captain? What do they play off?

Being personable.

My buddy won the Captains day comp this weekend, not expecting to win anything he didn't bring his smart shoes. He was wearing shorts and trainers and normally this would be frowned upon in the clubhouse so he was worried he wouldn't be let in (we're relatively new at the club and have had our tellings off over this sort of thing). The Captain came up shook his hand and said you're absolutely fine, come in, get your prize, don't mind the rules today you couldn't have known coming down here you'd win. That's all it takes, just a bit of common sense and niceness.

Niceness. That's all I look for in a Captain and he's got it in spades.

A decent sort who has the club and not his personal interests at heart. It is a fairly thankless task IMO and I don't know if I would have the free time or patience for it. I understand the honour of being asked etc but it still seems like a huge huge commitment to me

Just to be a man (or woman) of the people. Personable, approachable and not up their own bottoms is a good start :-)

Handicap is irrelevant imo.

I have been asked 3 times in my short golfing life as I get involved and try to get on with everyone. Not for me though having seen how they can be treated in the ladies sections - moan, whinge and bitch...about someone volunteering

They need to have a few quid in the bank so they can provide some decent prizes for Catpain's Weekend

Just trying to work out if that was intentional!

The captain needs to be someone the club is happy to have represent them (which does make me question the rationale of some clubs!) and from what I hear deep pockets are needed at some clubs. Knowledge of basic rules of golf and etiquette are optional!

As it gets harder and harder to find people to be club Captain - the criteria and standards used in selection is sliding too.

Basically, if you want to be captain, come on down.

Approachability . Since I joined my parkland club in 2010, I have had 4 captains and IMO only 1 has been easy to go to with questions or suggestions and that's the current one. He takes on board what u say in regards to course or general ideas. The previous 3 always seemed to make an excuse for certain things or never get back to u about your suggestion

Mate of mine was Captain at my Club, and he said you would not believe the complaints he received verbally and by email. 99% were petty and totally time wasting. Sounds like you have to have the patience of a saint, so perhaps not a job for me.

I have done it and believe me its a thankless task which involves a lot of hard work for little thanks from fellow members. Trying to organise team matches making sure you are there for all major tournaments and booking your own holidays around them. My missus was well chuffed with my year. I thought it was supposed to be enjoyable. I think not!
