hi all

my club has a strange handicap thingy for juniors ,you start off 54 with a ''club handicap'' and we play 9 hole comps every 2 weeks off red / ladies tees in the winter , (1nce a week in the summer)and if you get over 18 points your hcp goes down , anyway , when you get to 28 , you move from a club handicap to an official congu handicap , and for that you need to hand your 3 cards in of course , the only thing is , im only just turned 13 , and the yellow tees is a par 72 course , and the reds is 75 , so really what tees shoould i get my handicap off ,im currently playing off red tees playing to 29 simply because i havnt been in enough comps to get it down further than that as i only joined 2 months ago :( but i can easily play to a 20-17 hcp . so what do you think?

I would say if your a junior mate then you should be getting your handicap off the junior tee's. The cards are just general play cards you need to hand in.

Normally if your under 18 and paying junior fees your only allowed to play of red tees (check your club rules) and this is where you would get your handicap from.

The par of the course doesn't have much to do with the h/cap, its the standard scratch you play to. (There's a thread somewhere explaining this).

From my experience all juniors play from red tees unless a single figure h/cap where your then allowed to compete in senior competitions for h/cap purposes only.

This is just from my experiences but I would check with your club to see how they work things. Every club is different.

Good luck.

I disagree with the above comments. If you are going to be obtaining an official, male CONGU handicap to use in club competitions etc I would say that you should be doing it off the yellows or whites as with all other male members. The red tees are for use before you reach the suitable 28 handicap for playing the full course, once you are of an adequate standard you become equal to other full adult members in terms of your handicap, regardless of your age.

The only person who can tell you for definite though is your junior organiser, speak to him/her.

What? :) :o

Did I dream seeing our kids (under 18) playing off whites with the members for the last 30 months?

They must be strict in Scotland......

This is how it works at mine, I'm 99.99% sure. Small kids (like aged 8+) play off red in special comps over 9 holes. At the club up the road, they have blue tees even further forward. I also played at an Open Q venue where they had special "black tees" cut into the first cut...the par 5s were about 320!!!! The shortest par 3 (with a fairly large green) was about 50 yards.....love it :)

Christ, exactly what is wrong with golf clubs of Britain is found in that post! Not having a go at you but your clubs draconian rules....do you need to wear a collar and tie to go for a dump?! :D

Juniors should be encouraged at every turn in this game!

To be honest, does it matter? Just play, put your cards in and take whatever comes back.

If you play well then you earn more women when you're older apparently :p

Our Juniors play off the Yellows for bounce games and their comps, Matchplay & Strokeplay are off the Whites. The girls play off the Reds or Ladies Medal markers as appropriate.

To the OP, ask your Junior Convenor where you should be playing for, they should be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

At our club juniors over 28 h/p play off blue tees 28 to 18 h/p off yellows below 18 off whites.any junior who gets below 18 can play in full comps and can win but not in majors. As a junior organiser i have been trying for years to get this changed if your eligible to enter and have paid the comp fee You should be able to win. Banging head against brick wall comes to mind.

Hi,
I think if you want to have a offical handicap it has to be off the stableford tees in our club juniors play off the mens tees and once they get below 16 maybe 18 they are allowed to win comps, I think this is a fairly common rule to stop kids in the first summer they take up the game seriously when most of they jump from 28 down to 18 cleaning up in the comps.

Junior handicaps go up to 54 and are primarily aimed at getting youngsters started and obviously are not "official" for anything other than junior comps. We usually simply agree a fair starting point and then monitor and change as they play in the junior comps. In practice, there are few who don't start on the maximum and then get chopped quite quickly as they improve.

Once they are down to 28 (or 36 for girls) then away they go, free to enter any competitions etc though we do have rules around juniors winning board comps.

Any juniors who can already play to a decent standard are asked to put in 3 cards off the yellows just like any other new member.
