Have had the aim for ages to break 80 and also get to single figures (11.5 is my closest)

My last five round I have scored really well with my last two being (77) 6 over and (78) 7 over to finally get me below 80.

I know the handicap challenge is still there for competitive golf, but for day to day playing what next?

What challenges have you got set?

I guess 75 is next but was trying to think what else.

Make all your objectives SMART

Now it's all about beating it more often.

Yes a sub 75 would be great but realistically doing 3 more sub 80s before April would be an alternative.

I would say I'd just be aiming to go one stroke lower at a time of your best score is the ideal

But like Duncan says(and I often forget to do this too) just concentrating on the next shot... I have had a couple of rounds this year where the front 9 I've been well under H/C only to blow up because I get ahead of myself

I'm with ScienceBoy. for me your objective would be to complete your transition to the 80 plateau and then stabilise around it - in general playing just above and just below - for quite a few months I'd say. Once you have stabilised you are in a position to transition down to the next handicap plateau - and that plateau for me would be a couple of shots lower - so 78. And it would take quite a time.

Set yourself some simple and realistic targets around fairways hit, GIR and putts per round - establish a baseline by measuring what you do for a couple of months. Work on these each round (trying to beat your best for each category for example or improving a monthly average) and practice where you struggle. The score and hcap will take care of itself.

Do some careful analysis of your scores and how you're dropping shots, see if you can pick up where weaknesses and strengths lie, work hardest on the weaknesses and just try to improve rounds by one shot at a time. Your course management should improve concurrently.

Hope you haven't peaked, the lower you get the closer to your peak you'll be.

We have two par 5's and my best ever round (-2) was all 4's and 3's. Once......in 23 years as a member. I think keeping a 6 off your card is a more achievable and useful target for anyone targeting single figures.

Same here. Even for a Cat 1 player, it would be tough(I'm not).

Simply try and play more consistently more often. If you are keeping big numbers off the card on most rounds it'll make inroads into scores and then the handicap in comps. How about keeping a double off the card

How about setting a target of enjoying yourself more, and getting less hooked up on scoring? I'm off to Portugal tomorrow, and for 6 days golf will at no time take a card out on the course. It's about fun, not numbers.

I shoot low 90s and have never not had a 7!

nice target to go for

Numbers is the fun.....as long as they're good numbers.
But seriously you're not keen to test yourself against the courses, that means counting score surely?
