What Loft?

I currently own a Titleist Vokey SM4 58°, but it's too lofted for use on the fairway as I get under the ball too much. But it's great for bunker shots. I am looking to get another Vokey but am not sure which loft to get as I'm worried I will be getting under the ball too much again. I was thinking 50° or 52°. Any advice?

'Getting under the ball too much' is not really a problem of the club, but of your swing.

So a little more info about your actual 'problem' would be needed. Though something around the 50-52* should fill the gap between your PW and the 58 - if you really want a separate/specialist club to do that.

How far do you hit the 58* when hit well from the fairway? And what about your PW from the JPX800s?

58* can indeed be a really good SW. What is the bounce (that's the bit after the '58-'). Depending on your individual style, the bounce on the 'Gap' wedge may vary too. I need low bounce, others need mid or high bounce.

I have given up using a 60 degree lob wedge, due to the number of times I have gone right under the ball without moving it, especially in light rough. I now just use a standard sand iron for short pitch shots.

£20 on a lesson hitting off the fairway and out of bunkers could be one of the best investments you make. You should ideally be able to hit any wedge from literally any lie if you apply the correct technique and club selection.

I use my 60 degree wedge from 50 yds in and it's not a club I'd be without, especially when you're trying to play tight shots over a bunker

Simple tip ... In light rough play the ball forward, its sitting up, so you catch it on the up swing. Playing off the fairway you play it central or slightly back from centre, connect with the ball first then the turf ... Get that right then discuss loft and bounce.

I agree up to the point of using the 60 degree. Mine became a liability and my 58 can do everything I wanted (I use to have a 56 and then 60)

if the ball is sitting up on light rough then you have to centre out your weight. when chipping you usually want your weight onto your left side. if you do this when the ball is sitting up you SLIDE right under. try keeping your weight more neutral in this circumstances.

if you watch phil mickelsons secrets of the short game, all this is revealed! :one:
