I've played a few toughies but I think St Enodoc off the championship tees has to be about the hardest test I've ever played.

Yours?

there are 2 factors that make a course difficult (3 if you include the greens!) it's conditions that make most courses 'difficult' in practice but required length of carry can make holes unplayable to some.

as an example, the difference between Wentworth when they spray fertiliser on the rough and cut to 4" and the same course set up for club players is chalk and cheese - exactly the same with many links courses but courtesy of nature!

Bizarrely, Fulford. I'd played the year before on a benign day and thought it was a walk in the park. The following year I played it in a vicious cross-wind. Its an out and back course like many links courses but has the added complication of being tree lined, and I seemed to spend to many holes chipping back out onto the fairway from behind a tree.

That's not a difficult course, that's 'operator error'

;)

Carnoustie Championship in a 3 club wind. Brutal.

Any links course in that or stronger breeze! Though Walton Heath, or even The Shire, in that breeze could compete. Played St Andrews New in 35 mph gusting to 50 - straight off the North Sea. Didn't bother scoring - just 'enjoyed' the experience!

Silloth on Solway in 35mph+ wind & rain has been my most difficult encounter, can't wait to play it again though in dry settled conditions.

Nairn in a 35mph wind off the blue tee with the greens cut to less tha 2mm

next was the Jubilee in 25mph wind;)

Heard somewhere that you found one particular day at Blairgowrie rather difficult :D

I agree with Karen Carnoustie in the wind and rain is just awful.

Whoa.... hadn't even posted that yet! ;)

Carnoustie is tough but the hardest I've played was this year at Longniddry. Course lengthened for the Scottish Ladies Amateur and blowing an absolute hooley - I found it a complete battle. Of course, the proper golfers handled it quite well!

Wentwood Hills (The forerunner to the 2010 @ Celtic Manor)

Off the tour tees the day after that play off where only one hole was playable due to the rain.

7400yds, zero run, thick wet rough and only a 2 club breeze. It seemed like every hole was straight into the wind, don't think I hit an iron all day!!!!

Thought you would go with Carnoustie too lol

Lytham by a distance, although I haven't played Carnoustie.

Best word I can use to describe Lytham is claustrophobic, everything looks, and is tight, and you don't need to be far off line to be rogered. That was a calm day aswell!

Always, always struggle round Mortonhall, just cannot get my head round it.When it's wet underfoot is even worse.I actually hate it, but my pal is a member so play it occasionally.

Strangely - Tylney Park last year off the whites (not even the blue's). Thick rough lined every hole both sides and collared each green. Five yards of semi per fairway and 5 yards off either side of the green and then into no mans land. Total slog and didn't enjoy it although we won our match. I think we all lost at least 5 balls and I lost one where I pitched on the green and it rolled through and into the long stuff. Unfair coming in from 150 yards, hitting the target.

This year it had been all cut back and was a different course altogether. They were having no entries in club comps as members complained it was too hard and the majority of those entering were NR'ing. That came from the members I played in the match this year. Much better course this year and joy to play

I enjoyed St Enodoc when I played it but it did teach me a lesson.

Hardest round I have ever had was at Perranporth in 36 km/h winds. Almost walked in after 9 but the shot to 1 foot on the short par 3 8th made me finish my round.

Worst moment was my driver on the 2nd, which went nowhere.

In normal conditions Dundonald.

Toughest ever.... Muirfield in horizontal sleat.
Played one of the best games of my life and scored an 86 in a Pro's winter league.
Came 3rd with only 7 cards out of about 50 competitors returned.

As much as it hurts to admit it Beddy, I agree with you on this one. Tylney Park was a joke in 2012.
BTW, Lambert came round last night and sends his regards .... on a brick through your window!
