And why......

For me the short 13th at Muirfield.
Not too long, slightly uphill, narrow hour glass green with very deep bunkers either side and short right.
Green slopes to the front from the middle and if you are not 'up' the ball can run back 20 yards.
Safe shot is to play to the back which means pitching the ball just past the narrowest part of the green.

17th at the Oxfordshire. 2 choices after a decent drive, 150+ yards over a lake for a possible eagle, or go round the lake or birdie at best.... Man I love that hole! (par is the best I have scored!)

I can think of 2

1. The 9th on Hawkstone parks Hawkstone course. Drastically elevated par 3 with bunkers front and left with steep banking and thick rough to the right.

2. 16th at Wychwood Park. Lovely dogleg left par 4 with bunkers in play off the tee, unless you bail out right (making the second longer) and water in play to the left and infront of the green for the second.

There are probably more, but those are the 2 that stand out the most.

The 16th at Sabie River in South Africa. A 470 yard par 5 which sweeps right around a dam with a herd of hippos in it. The green juts out into said dam and has 3 tiers, the lowest of which is furthers into the dam. No bunkers on the hole but it is framed by a ton of fever trees. Putting out with a 2 ton bull hippo displaying to his brood is pretty damn awesome. Especially when he's only 20 yards away.

Designed by Mother Nature.........6th hole @ Painswick - 200yd par 3 played from the top of painswick beacon down to a green which is formed natually by some mounds with a false front short left. No bunkers.

Wouldn't look out of place on the best of Open Rota courses.

I really should go and play Painswick since it's only 15 minutes drive!

Do it Aztec. Quirky, fun, bonkers, fiddly, awkward, weird - it's a must play (just not very often!!) ;)

It's only £15 or so I think. I'll come join you if times fit in.

Sounds like my kind of course. I'll let you know if I get something sorted.

Let me know if you want a round at my place, I know how much you love it ;) :D (but in all seriousness, I'm not sure the last time you played it, but they're working really hard to improve it).

The 11th at Ardglass is a terrific hole in my opinion, 488yd short par 5, teebox forces you to at least cut a little off the bay/beach (teebox is not far from the line of the last white house) and no guarantees where it will end up. There is a stream running across the fairway to the sea just about reachable too and makes you think about using less than a driver.
The second shot also has the sea all down the right (OOB) to a decent sized green. It is the lowest part of the course which then leads to a climb up to the 12th teebox, (where the photo was taken) it is a cracking par 3 too hitting from high up down onto a low green with the sea to the right and beyond the green.

11th on the East at Wentworth

16th at Hever Castle

both 4's both long but not too long both have generous landing areas for layup drives and 2nds but the more you take on the more elements come into play

both look as if they have been there for ever

First time I played Ardglass I was so determined not to go OOB right I managed to hit a massive high hook and I finished up on the par 5 that runs parallel on top of the hill. Played down that fairway before pitching back down the hill onto the green :whoo:

17th at Carnoustie. I still can't hit the right club off the tee, and if I lay up well short it leaves a massive 2nd to the green. TBH there's any number of holes on that course... fantastic place!

Dog Hill-6th Hole at Greencastle GC, a Par 3 that's quite long with a humped hill which looks like a dog (Hence the name) and the sea to your right, usually strong breezes with the sea over the back of the green
