I just dont get it ???????
......what ever happened to judgement and knowing what you hit each club, and judgement by eye, as the game was meant to be played ??

If you want yardages, get a Course Planner, thats surely what they are for ????

OBV havn't tried one!

Chris, the human eye is not always correct, GPS is.

Course planners dont always have carry distances hazads etc, GPS do.

Just try one mate , I have used mine at a couple of courses so far and was amazed at how far out some markers and planners were. Decent bit of gear but each to ther own mate.

Cheers

Midnight...

I haven't yet seen tiger pacing out yardages, or guessing, so if he doesn't, why should I be a martyr?

Golf is hard enough as it is. I can't see why the skill should be in estimating yardage. That is just stupid. Use whatever kit you are allowed to use.

I take it you play with metal woods, steel/graphite shafts, multi layer balls, titanium big headed drivers, high MOI putters, dual strap bags, spikes, tees, umbrellas, goretex, etc. All of these are not in the original spirit of the game, just deal with it, and move with the times.

I don't get why you want to keep guessing what yardage you have when there are better options available....

Have you ever played a course that didn't have 150 yard markers? I have. It was bloody horrible. I (and my mates) were all over the place with our distances.
Now, every course I play has got 150 markers.
;)

I was thinking the other day how much of an advantage a GPS is ? probably none at all if you are a pro and had your caddie do all the course yardages for you, but for us mere mortals ?

If asked before a game with a friend, would you be willing to sacrifice something to use the GPS ?

Maybe give an extra shot, or maybe take a club out the bag ?

What do you think ?

I'm playing a mate next week and I just know he's going to kick up about it.

I used my Shotmiser for the first time last weekend. I found a couple of tee boxes wrong and doesnt give winter greens on it but overall it was great and as I only played 9 holes on a par 35 I shot 39 my best so far this winter.

So you don't use course yardage markers then?

If you want yardages, get a Course Planner, thats surely what they are for ????

For a start they slow the game down and not all courses supply them whereas GPS gives you the correct data where you are and speeds up play as been proven.

As been said before, try one and they give you a new golfing lease of life.

Sorry Guys, I just wont do it, its not in the spirit of the game as far as I am concerned.

Each to their own I guess.

You could say the same about using a 460 driver on courses not made for them, you could also say the same about using improver irons, if golf moved like this then we would be still playing with hickory shafts and gutta-percha balls with little or not enjoyment for the average golfer, but if you feel that strongly that they are spoiling the spirt of the game why don't you use the hickory shafts and gutta-percha balls? ;)

Parmo.

It is COMPLETELY different, Electronic wizardry are outside assistance if EVER there was outside assistance.

As far as I know, the game has always been played with Clubs & Balls, whether they are hickory shafted or Graphite shafted, and whatever the balls are made of.
Its inevitable that new technology will be incorporated into shafts/heads/balls etc, but, it is still you and the club and ball that have always been present.

But, GPS's Rangefinders are 'Outside assistance' of an unbeleivable nature, and I just dont agree with them.

With my erratic hitting, knowing the distance is no great help. I just keep trying to get it straight until I get to chipping distance.

Chris,
Like it or not GPS has been proved to speed the game up and gives more enjoyment to players from cat 4 to pro's when slow play is a concern to all, I am sure the same thing was said about the electronic system installed in tennis or the reply system in rugby league, but to most now agree they are of benefit and moves the game forward with technology and brings people into the game and keeps the game moving with the times.

Each Pro tour players caddy stands beside his player and gives him exact yardages, these where in the past taken by the caddy and indeed amatuers in top events before the tournament started by yardage wheel now these are taken by GPS by many if not all caddies.Did you therefore have this rant about the yardage wheel ChrisMc? :p

Ok, theh professional golfers get there own caddies who know all the yardages for them ..etc etc

They get it easy....

Now with GPS systems we amatuers too can know all the distances etc!!

Okay, lets not be too harsh on ChrisMc. He is entitled to his opinion. I would consider myself a traditionalist as far as golf is concerned. Up until early summer this year I'd never seen a GPS unit used for golf purposes. (Navigation yes, but not golf!) I was against their use and thought this was a step too far.

After seeing one in use on an outing, and benefiting from the info available I changed my views of them. Does it make the game easier ? Maybe, I certainly know what I need to carry to get to the green or miss a hazard etc. but I still have to put the swing on the ball and get the ball to go to the right place! Thats the hard part.

Now that the R&A have given each club the authority to allow (or disallow)there use then that's fine by me.

I recently took the plunge and got myself a SC2.5. Amazing is the only way to describe it. I bought it mostly for use on other courses rather than my own, but, if we end up with a local rule allowing their use in comps I'll be using mine just as I would previously have used my yardage book/planner.

What I can see is debate about the have/have not divide. Afterall it isn't the cheapest piece of golfing equipment in the bag is it?

Right I'm off to hammer my feathery into a round shape again!
