Having hit my personal worst, but followed it with some grip changes. Here is what I learnt from my games in Nov.

1) Distance is unpredictable.. and you will mostly be driving/hitting much lesser than what you do in the summer months. So take an extra club.

2) Roll is non existent. If you carry 200y, then you drive 200y. Ground is too soft for any roll.

3) Hitting down on the ball can cause it to sink into the ground and looks like a fat shot and makes you look like an idiot.

4) Dont play competitions and they increase your handicap. (Played Nov medals and S/F,and have been cut by 0.2)

5) There is no way you can predict which way the greens will break, skid, jump, bump or anything to avoid going into the hole

6) You still need to drink to stay hydrated, but because you dont sweat as much, you need a pit stop on the front 9 as well as a the back 9

7) Time to find the ball among the fallen leaves is directly proportional to the number of people queued up at the tee box behind you.

8) A Hero shot = Sensible shot + dropped ball

9) Play to experiment and stay in shape

10) Enjoy the game, and dont be too harsh as it is not your fault (never is)

I change my swing slightly in the soggy months. I tend to try and sweep a little more rather than the old hack down. I still take the odd mammoth divot. its hard to break some habits!

In winter anytime you can get out an play a full course it is a good thing. We have comps throughout the winter and will always enter. If I go up then so be it and if I get cut it's just a few decimals less I need to worry about in 2014 to get to single figures. Some good points though

1. Keep it on the fairway.
2. Er...that's it

Never sure how pleased to be when a thinned 9 flies into the green at head height, rips up an 18 inch gash and rolls up for a kick in.

The fun really starts when we get a good frost after some rain.

You pitch on the green and it bounces out the back.
You pitch it short of the green and it stops dead.
Then when you try to chip on the first 'bounce' is a huge skid!

Personally I like Winter golf, it's a good proving ground. Sideways rain, gales, snow, mud, temporary greens, more mud, darkness, fog, even more mud, what's not to love!

I rather enjoy winter golf to be honest. It cuts out the lucky bounce shots that beat you in a close match, it makes me concentrate on my ball contact, if you hit it on line and the right distance you will be rewarded for it and most of all it's fun.

we have zero of those problems :D thank god for links

but what i will say. is now winter is on, its turkey competitions at our place, and didnt i go on a string of high 30 points in a row, to be told, its non qualifying during winter, so me getting all excited about getting my 1st cut to be told no more cuts till next year, unless you outright win on the day then its a 1 shot cut, gutted was an understatement
