What golf ball would you expect for free?

Just a quick question regarding the quality of ball you would reasonably expect as a free promo item?

Would you expect it to be a premium ball that everyone would be happy to use?

Or maybe a lower make of a top brand like an NXT, Velocity, AD333?

A callaway, W staff, Taylor Made etc.?

Would anyone actually use a promo ball that was a solo, pinnacle, distance, wilson, dunlop?

well, as the New DT Solo is, IMO, an excellent ball, the Pinnacle Gold Eception is a rebadged NXT and many on here rave about the Wilson DX2............

the answer has to be that people might use any ball; but knowing which they would both value, and use, is impossible - although you would probably succeed with a ProV1 when many wouldn't appreciate a Lethal or 2013iS!

would be surprised if premium balls are given away on promo, but guess depends on the promo and target groups. Generally would expect ad333 type of all purpose ball though.

Depends who's giving it away, if it a big name then the ball make should match, if on the other hand its a company that make/sell ball retrievers then a lake ball would be appropriate!

AD333's are sort of the norm. I went to Golf Live at Celtic Manor earlier this year, and they were giving away free 2013 Z Stars (one at a time, not sleeves of 3) from the short game area as it was sponsored by Cleaveland / Srixon. I think I walked away with 6 in the end, they would just wander round handing them out.

Then the Titleist area gave away free Prov1's & 1x's as 'golf ball fitting' - you told them what you struggled with and they matched a ball form their range to your needs.

However, as a freebie with a mag, or Golf Insurance, Ad333's. I also got 12 Hex Black tours from GM when signing up for a 12 month sub. That was nice :)

A Titleist, TM or Bridgestone would be minimum requirements as its a promotional ball.

I always feel the standard of ball reflects on the promoter, likewise for golf brollys, when I see a brolly thats blown inside out or spokes broken and its dumped unceremoniously in the bin, that companies name is still 'promoting' but this time negatively....

no-one boasts about finding an old Pinnacle in the rough but they do when its a Prov1:thup:

When the wife subscribed me to TG last year, they send a dozen AD333s; when it came up for renewal, she cancelled and I subscribed and got a dozen Z-Stars.

Had I waited a month, I'd have got 2doz Bridgestone E6s for the same cost.

My GM sub expires in January, I'll wait and see if there's any offers kicking around then before deciding whether to resubscribe*... ;)

* Kidding, of course I'll resubscribe!

I think people will use anything if its free.

What percentage of the UK's golfers do we have on here? Less than 1%? People on here are picky, I dont know anyone else, regardless of handicap who wouldnt use a sleeve of balls if they were given for free, regardles of what they were.

The general feeling in this forum isnt really indicative of the golfing world in general I have found. People are generally happy to play with free stuff.

Hope that helps.

Got a bag full of balls from golf live last year, twice through the titleist tent and plenty from srixon. To be honest I'd use any ball especially if its free, they all have a purpose.

Am I the only person that likes playing with a yellow bullet? As far as a free ball goes I will play pretty much any brand as long as its in good nick.

so mr Mulligan, did the answers help? are they for something in particular or in relation to your own experiences?

Any, it is a free promo item. I'd expect any ball that a manufacturer was wanting to promote. If I didn't want it for play I'd throw it in a practice bag. Admittadly if it was an incentive promo (such as for subscribing to GM) then I'd expect at least mid range. Was very very happy with my Hex blacks.

Currently playing FG Tours and Tour X. Also have DX3's for the winter. Would be more than happy with most Wilson Staff balls for play on the course. As for the other brands again I'd just put them in the practice bag if I didn't like them but I'd give them a chance.

Depends if I have tried it before or not. Generally dislike the all out distance balls but more than happy to try any brand. Have even given the Lidl Crivits a bash before now!

My wife has recently started with a new company and she brought me back some leftover promo balls from a golf day they held. They were handing out 3 pro vs in a little zip up holder. Apparently the husband of the CEO used to be a county player and told the CEO that it would be embarrassing to hand out anything less.

I disagreed and thought that it was a total waste. I would not expect anything more than an AD333/NXT/DX2 as a freebie. One of my playing partners was at a BMW promo day a couple of months ago and all of their logo balls were Pinnacle.

The company I work for offers out logo's Titleist baws as promotional gifts at trade shows.

Problem is they're the DT Solo or PTS carry

Since the marketing manager got a ribbing from our golf society, he's trading up to Velocitys'.

It's a start

While I like shiney things,I also recognise that at my level (24/5 hcp) I probably can't tell the difference between a premium ball and a lake ball. I'd be happy to play with any free ball, though I do enjoy it when I find or am given a premium to play with!

I tend to purchase mid tier balls like AD333s and DX3s, etc...
