Further to Virtuocity's post on driver fittings and a comment alex made got me thinking,

Lets say money was not irrelevant, but not a the crucial factor here.

What distance gain would you need to see from a new driver before you bought it.

When i had a tour at TMAG Towers, Daryl who is the chap who deals with the tour pros. said "most" touring pro's will switch with 1 yard gain.

Can't see your pesky poll on the mobile version. I don't even own a driver currently :o

I'll have a look at the 915 when our pro shop gets them in.

I won't really be looking for out and out distance, it's all about the dispersion for me.(and forgiveness on necky horrible strikes:o)

You missed out the option about foregiveness/better dispersion. For a majority of handicap golfers I would argue the distance you may gain is not worth it if it means a loss in foregiveness. Which one could argue you will get the the low spin models.

So for me if a new driver went much the same distance but the dispersion was a lot better and I was hitting it on the fairway a lot more then I'd change. If I got an extra 30 yards but it was no easier or maybe harder to hit the fairway and more inconsistent then I would not bother.

I am going to vote for 1-5. Although I don't think I would spend new driver money on 1 yard I would on 5 yards. As Nick says though, maybe the same distance but more friendly is a little more relevant to me now as unless I change the way my numbers are presented they are pretty dialed in.

I am pretty sure I cannot swap kit and gain more than 5 years anyway.

^^^ Cant get much better numbers from that ball speed!

Missed it off intentionally, the poll was purely about distance.

It isn't possible to get a smash factor in excess of 1.5 unless you are using an illegal 'hot' driver. In practice, a VERY good amateur will get somewhere around 1.48

it's 100% the confidence it gives me but, in what may be contribute to your question Scott, I wouldn't carry any driver that didn't give me both this confidence and at least 10 yds carry over my Mini (which has effectively become my personal benchmark)

Im a very very good armature!! :D

Ye its random innit! This was Golf Principles Trackman and Jason is no joke. He seems very in with Trackman and I believe the software was all up to date so not sure what its about.

Rick Shiels shows here a 5 yard distance gained between 2 drivers 17 years apart in technology
Dispersion however was a different story.

I'm firmly in the dispersion/consistency camp as comparably set up drivers (shaft/loft etc) I believe all hit within a very similar distance parameter but some are more consistent/forgiving, and that's the one we are all (should be) seeking imo.

Yeah, it's these sort of figures that make me very dubious about LM's.

I recently hit the G30 3 wood in AG, according to the monitor I hit a couple over 275, one went 278 yards. My current 3 wood rolls out about 245 in summer, maybe 250 if I really nail it. I know for a fact I can't hit a 3 wood 275! They are great for side by side comparisons between 2 clubs but I always take the numbers with a pinch of salt

Complete opposite for me, am currently trialling shortening shaft lengths and giving up a little distance to gain accuracy (driver shafts just seem to get longer and longer and doesnt work well for me!). If you could get me 10yds greater dispersion you can have 10 yards distance ;)

what you might find Fundy is your strikes improve, smash factor increases and you actually gain distance or at the very least dont lose any but gain dispersion:thup:

That will be no good at all mate, you will then be playing from the left side of the wrong fairway not the right side of it... wrong angle! :D

Na, but lets be honest, you hit your hybrid longer than 99% of the forum base hit there driver, you have 10 yards you can give back if someones offering an exchange for dispersion.

That was the outcome on GC2 of putting my 3 wood shaft into the driver head a few weeks ago. Strike improved enough to cover a loss of almost 5mph on swing speed. Have now had a driver shaft cut down and weighted properly, hopefully gets similar if not better results.

Only likely downside of this is if it works out long term then Im going to need to cut down my 3 wood shaft and possibly my hybrid too!

Loving the people going for the It's just new and shiny option. I'm currently toying with going for a second hand Nike Covert driver. Blimey it looks good. All red and shiny and stuff. Who needs to be fitted when it looks like that?
