Is it the competitiveness? is it the fact your outside and getting fresh air enjoying the nice surroundings? Is it the skill of the game? Is it the game itself the way it gives you the bug???
Or is it the opportunity to blow loads of money on new kit and excuses to go to spain and portugal more often???

Golf is the only sport that makes me think about it all week in anticipation. Football used to but I gave up on being competitive when I got to around 25 as i'd put on a stone or so and wasnt just as quick as I was.
Keeping mentally sharp still leaves me at times on the course, that is what ive got to work at and love it when a hole comes together (as hannibal would say) and the iron off the tee, mid iron into the green and that first putt goes in or at least stops within breathing in distance, making me feel it was worth the change of tactics. Hooking an iron into the trees, barely finding it, hacking out sideways only to still be in the rough on the other side of the fairway, hacking up to the greenside 1st cut then chipping on and 2 putting hacks me off.

I love the competition with my mates, the rivalry that golf produces even when it's only for who's buying lunch is fantastic.
I am also absolutly addicted to golf and no matter how bad the round I have just had there is always one shot that makes it all worthwhile and makes you want to come back again, and nothing beats getting away from everything for 4-5 hours.

As a competitive person i love the competition be it the monthly medal or a friendly game with my brothers or friends. I like the fact that golfers are a great bunch of people.

I also love the fact that you even after a disaster of a day on the course you rememebr the one great shot which brings you back the next day.

The fact that every course is different and often glorious; that the people you play with are generally good fun; that you never know what's coming on the next shot.....and that there's ALWAYS a better round on the horizon.

It's getting that feeling when the ball comes off the club and soars into a clear blue sky and you just know that you've made the perfect shot.
It's the moment when the really difficult putt from off the green and across the slope trickles dead in the hole.
It's being out there in glorious countryside, surrounded by more wildlife than David Attenborough.
It's the realisation that in every round there will be a moment of total rapture.
You would have to be dead not to find enjoyment in even the worst round.

I love the fact that I will never get to play at the level I want, there is always something that needs changing or improving.

The banter I have with mates, this was the one of the main things I was missing when i retired from rugby and went into a mega depressive stage in my life until I started playing golf and found my competitive drive again.

First thing on a summer morning, the course is clear of people and there is no one chasing you like a dog after a rabbit, the sun raising over the fairway and the peace and quite, its the best feeling in the world and thats when I score my best rounds and makes it all worth while.

Its a competitiveness thing for me as well to be honest. Used to play football at a decent standard but after a bad break aint been back to it yet.

I enjoy that golf involves me competing against myself and the course. I play against my handicap and see where I end up at the end of the round. And I have no one else to blame when something goes wrong!

I am just enjoying a sport that I can continue to improve at. I played rugby from the age of 7 and watched my game get a little worse every year since about 25. That became frustrating. When injury forced me to stop playing I took up golf and it is such a change to go out every week looking to improve.

The people you meet and the conversations you have.

It is a small world when you think about it, I have been in a bar in Menorca wearing a pair of shorts and a golf branded T-Shirt, next thing I know a guy has started talking to me for 1/2 an hour and the mrs is bollocking me for taking so long with the bevvies!

Golfers always seem to find other golfers.

I think its that we can all play on a level playing field and the thrill of being out in the fresh air. Particularly nice on a summer morning playing the course on your own. Gives me time to think about life the universe and everything and helps put things in perspective.

I've had 2 really bad years. I was in hospital last year (and about an hour away from croaking) lost my job in January (didn't get another until August), money has been tight and we were in debt and my wife has not been great healthwise in 2007. However put a ball on the tee with no-one else on the course except the wildlife take a smooth swing and suddenly I feel my problmes are insiginificant compared with many a lot less fortunate.

I agree, golf is a pause button for all lifes worries. You can chop the ball round the course like a complete tumshie BUT if you hit ONE shot right off the screws it makes the four and a half hours of pain all worthwhile.

And just when you think you have the game sussed, it dumps you firmly on your 4r5e.

i like the game as it is all about you ,you cant play a bad shot and turn round and lay the blame elsewhere and although you are paired agsinst people on a medal day you are not just playing them , you are playing the whole club but most of all you are still trying to beat your last score to reduce the handicap
