I played a round today and I quickly had a short list of the things I love about golf:

I love it when there are white leaves exactly where my ball landed

I love it when you're 200 yards away from the green, wait 10 minutes for a 4 ball to hole out, then hit the ball so fat that when it lands it still has the original piece of turf underneath it.

I love it when I nearly break my ankle in a trap cunningly disguised as a rabbit hole.

I love it when you hit the ball so high in a headwind, you have genuine concern for the people behind you.

I love it when not one of the 4 ball in front of you has made it 20 yards past the ladies tees and still doesn't let you through.

I love it when a man who's trouser legs have never met his ankles tells me that a one ball has no standing, as I storm to the next hole.

I love it when you hit your first great drive of the day -basically run off the tee in excitement, only to have to trudge back 50 yards from where you thought it landed and admire your 160 yard beast.

What do YOU love about golf? x

I love it when you got to a society day and you are put with a 24 handicapper who used to play off 13 but hasn't played in donkeys years and is only there because his best mate kept on and on about him making the numbers up.
And that love just gets deeper and deeper as I'm writing 4/3, 5/3, 3/3, 4/4 on his card and he wins the longest drive and nearest the pin competitions and also comes in with 48 points. I love that I do.

And I just love it when you are playing a tough par 3, stroke index 13 and you hit a superb iron to within 2 feet, miss the tap in putt but secure a well earnt 2 points and your 13 handicap mate duffs a chip in from off the green and gets 4.

I love it when a low handicap under 25 golfer launches his putter 50yrds cos he missed another 6 footer, nearly in tears as he says again for the 9th time I'm giving this game up cos it's **it. :D

I love slogging round a damp course early on a Saturday and watching a 16 and 22 handicapper amass 44 and 43 points each and turning you over 8&7. I love chipping in for an eagle and only getting a half. I love watching 22 handicappers stick it to 3 feet on successive holes (once from 180 yards). I love having a partner who's sould contribution was a half at the 8th.

i love it when one of the local moron's tell mee they know how to hit a shot... and then totally hack it to bits.

I also love it when someone watches me when i'm just about to hit the ball.

I love it when the pro is watching you and you hit it out of bounds or when you hit a great shot when no one is around.

I love it after playing the other day and getting 2 pts (yes 2 dont ask!!) on the back 9 then playing today and getting 19 pts.Love it on the forum when all the low h/cs think the high h/cs are bandits and the high h/cs think the low h/cs are whingers. :D :D :D

Being convinced by ball and club manufactures that the kit you bought last year is rubbish compared to this years latest kit.

Convincing myself that I can play this game to a reasonable level, and then blobbing 4 holes!

Knowing that all the while you're waiting for the green to clear, that the group behind you are wishing you to just take your shot. Knowing of the pressure on you, you just fat it, and you know the group behind are thinking, 'what the hell was he waiting for!?'

The 1st tee que! And spectators!

75 year olds with clubs as old, and any old ball, that drive 160 straight down the middle, and par more holes than they bogey. (I actually admire them a lot, but it's very frustrating, and I realise that I could learn a lot from them!)

I love pitch marks in the green, it gives me so many excuses for my putting!

Thinking that you have enough distance between you and the group in front; and then catching it real sweet and having to shout 'fore' whilst they're trying to putt! :o (See 'fatting'!)

I absolutely love playing somebody in the Singles of our annual inter club knockout comp who (playing off a 28 handicap) pars our 14th hole, which is 480 yards and SI 1. I need an eagle just to half with them. Why bother!!!!

I love it when I go to the range on a cold wet winters night and spend a happy hour hitting great shot after great shot and then turn out on a sunny winters morning a couple of days later and discover that I have no idea in which direction the ball is going fly, skim or bobble, whatever I do to try a correct it....

HC 18.2
D & 5w Progen FullBore things that I've had since I started and cant be parted from;
Irons, Cleveland HiBore XLi's.
Wedges, Cleveland CG15 54 and 60
Putter, Odyssey Mallet (My Saviour!)

I love it when a low handicap under 25 golfer launches his putter 50yrds cos he missed another 6 footer, nearly in tears as he says again for the 9th time I'm giving this game up cos it's **it. :D

Class :D :D

I love the fact that when you hit a good drive on a par 5 and you say to yourself ill take my 5W for my second address the ball , wind up to hit it to within 20yrds pitching distance of the green only to top the ball have it come nearly waste high and drop to the ground and roll back 6in from where it originally had a lovely fluffy lie.

How on earth can you play a game that gives you a longer shot to the green for your 3rd shot than you had for your 2nd. :D

I love it when you arrive at a shared tee at the same time as 3 juniors and the club champion. You let them tee off first and they all smoke it 250 down the middle and then stand and watch as you top your drive 50 yards and just about reach the ladies tee.

I love it when I find someone elses ball in the rough but not mine.
And when the ball in question is my provisional not the original.

I love it when I get up at stupid o'clock in the morning to play in what I think is the last qualifying competition of the year (because I only have 2 so far and to be eligible to win comps you need to have played in 3), miss practice and be half an hour late for a county pool match when I'm in with a chance of getting England trials, shoot gross 75 off 11 and think I'm in for a decent cut as well as having played my 3 qualifying comps, only to find out it's not qualifying and there aren't any more until March 2010.

I love it when you find yet another Donnay instead of your Titleist

I love it when you see someone playing from exactly where your ball is on the adjacent fairway.

I love it when someone beaten by a higher handicapper says "well done mate, well played"

I love it when you hit a great shot and somebody plays your ball.

I really love taking 1 shot to cover 300yds and 4 more from 50 yds on a par 4.

I love people moving on the green when you are putting.

I love my match play opponent when he says great shot, stay out of that ditch! because he really means it and hopes I do well.

I love that loud shout of fore when the ball lands 100 yds away from anybody.

I love looking back at the tee seeing people with hands on hips as if to say hurry up when you yourself is held up by the people in front with nowhere to go.

hmmmm......

I love hollow tined greens, soggy greens, pitchmarked greens, uncut greens, bumpy greens, rockhard greens, tiny little greens the size of a thumbnail, bunkers with no sand, bunkers with stones in, bunkers with so much sand a digger would be better than the club I'm using, being rushed on a green as the 4ball behind is looking twitchy, putting whilst balls land around me, missing short putts, missing long putts, 3 putting, 4 putting, teeing grounds that I can hardly see my ball even though I tee'd it up, teeing grounds where I can't get a level stance, leaves, rabbit holes, deer footprints, old golfers who play 6 shots to my 1 and are right up my arse for the whole round, people who score 36+ points everytime they go out, waterproofs that simply aren't!, rain, fatting shots, thinning shots, shanking shots, ditches IN THE TREES, temporary greens, temporary tees, rockhard mats, those black rubber mats!, injuries, people who moan about slow play because they play at a million miles an hour, people who throw clubs, cheats, people who pick up my ball, silly club rules, hitting my provisional as bad as the initial shot, gimmies, people who tell you what they just did wrong in their swing on every shot they hit, 28 handicappers who offer swing advice, losing, getting stuck on my right side, losing my ball, losing my provisional, having to hit an iron off of par 4's where I can clearly reach the green with a driver simply to speed up play..... there's more!

BUT, most of all I love the way my swing and scoring currently reflect the amount of years of practice, effort and money I've put into playing this beautiful game :)

Love it on the forum when all the low h/cs think the high h/cs are bandits and the high h/cs think the low h/cs are whingers.

And the mid handicappers just laugh at everybody else happy in the knowledge that overall, they are the creme de la creme
;)
