Morning all,

Was just thinking about course design, and thought of a question for you rowdy lot.

Which design feature do you find the most difficult?

For example, my course (Walmersley) takes advantage of the natural slopes, being built on the side of a hill. I can only think of 2 fairways that are anywhere near relatively flat, and alongside thick moorland rough, this makes it a tricky task. Having said that, I enjoy the challenge it presents so couldn't be happier!

Other people may despise the thought of a heavily bunkered green, or water, water everywhere and I'd be interested to know.

Hello Jack how's things? Not spoke in a while.

Water hazards for me are my nightmare. 9 times out of 10 if I have to tee off over water my ball usually ends up in there!!

I can vouch for Walmersley being a tough course with some tough fairways but like you say it's a challenging course but really enjoyable.

Massively elevated greens.
Not a big fan.
Nothing worse than hitting a reasonable drive down a hole and thinking, "cushty, according to the card I've only got about 160 to go" to find that the green sits about 30 yards up and your sweetly struck 7/6 iron has now become a career best 4 iron or 5 wood.

Water without a doubt. Alcohol I can cope with but water gives me the shakes. Duff a drive into the rough or hit into a bunker, and you can still make par. Hit into water and you get a bogey or a double. Par out of water is rare.

ball below my feet. Always struggle with those. Don't mind it when the ball is above my feet, pretty good at those shots so when it comes to undulating fairways I'm torn as to whether I like them or not! Definitely a challenge though!

Par out of water is rare.

Have to mention a "fluke" that happened at Cooden a few months ago Brian. Playing my "nemesis" hole (par 5 15th) my two playing partners both hit superb, long drives that split the fairway.
Me? In my attempt to avoid a slice OOB (which is my usual party trick here) I managed to come "right over the top" and pulled my drive into the pond that sits about 200 yards out on the left hand side.
I took a drop and hit a superb 4 iron out of the semi, 8 iron pin high but off the green to the right and canned the putt for a 5.
My playing partners both hit great 2nd shots, knocked on and both three jerked for bogey 6's.
Funny old game isn't it???
:D

But that's an easy hole Rob. It was a drive and 8 iron when I played it.

Worst for me is being in a bunker and not being able to get a decent stance.
A reasonably common occurrence with links style pot bunkers.

2 tiered greens, I really struggle with pace when putting up to a higher tier. Not so bad putting down to a lower level.

Any shot where the ball is quite a bit below my feet - it makes my hips "clunk" and my left knee grinds, trying to settle down over the ball and is quite disconcerting and often leads to a poor shot

Walmersley certainly has some challenging fairways, especially the one where you aim up the left and if you are lucky you don't end up in the right hand rough. We have a knockout there in April its going to be a tough match, it does seem a "homers" course.

For me the things I struggle with most are deep revetted bunkers, probably because I am not used them so can normally only get out by going sideways or backwards.
