I'm very much a newbie having only started about six weeks ago, I've got no 1,2 or 4 irons do I need these ?
I got a nice set of ping eye 2 clubs minus the above second hand and feel quite happy with these but today noticed lads using hybrids regularly ? What's the advantage and is this something a newbie like me needs to check out ?
Comments most welcome.

Don't bother with 1,2 and 4 irons as these are difficult clubs to hit consistently.

Hybrids can have the same loft as 1,2 and 4 irons but are much easier to get the ball up in the air with!

My response (as an 18 handicapper) would be that the most important things to spend your money on are lessons and practise. Don't fall in to the trap of trying to get all the latest gear until you have decided that you enjoy playing the game and want to continue in the long term. If you have a basic set of clubs then find a decent teaching pro in your area and spend your money with them for the first few months while you decide if you enjoy the game and want to take it further. I'm sure that if you let us know your location then people on here will give you recommendations of good pros in your area.

The standard set now is usually:

Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood/2h, 7wood/3h, 4h, 5-9 irons, PW, 52, 56, Putter

Some people vary to make it more wedge biased by skipping either the driver or the 5wood/2h and/or 7wood/3h.

To start if you have a Wood, 5-9 irons, PW, SW and a putter you are set to go for a long while. Get those lessons in for a winter then look at 2nd hand clubs in the new year.

My irons & 3 wood are both 2nd hand (and about 6 and 3 years old respectively too), perform just as good as my new clubs!

Thanks for the tips gents. Getting lessons sorted. Pleased to say I won my first time ever tonight. Just a bounce game with a friend that has been playing for 5 or 6 years.
I took some good advice and stopped trying to belt it and concentrated more on accuracy. This went along way to helping. Its easier from the fairway than my usual rough position. A very long way to go but glad to say this forum is full of useful tips and ideas. Atb
