Gent's Roll-Up Stableford and Monthly Medal this morning, and the first 18 holes I've played at my local club for weeks, so was really looking forward to it. Got to the 4th and I normally quite like this hole, 350 or so yards, OOB on the left. Usually push or slice my drive, but generally get away with it. Not this time, landing in the deep rough. Took a 4I provisional. (Cracking shot by the way, slight draw, down the middle, past the 150-yards-to-go marker!)

Find my first ball, and hack away four times to get it out of the nettles! (I say a rude word.) Should've taken a penalty drop! Slice my next shot back into the deep stuff up near the green, one hack to get it out, chip over the green to the back fringe, two putts for a 10! Damn it.

Back round the second time I go with the 4I, remembering the cracker I hit before. Shank it about 50-degrees off to the right! Duff my next shot into, yep, you've guessed it, the deep stuff! AGGH! Got it out first time this time, then pulled my next shot, and three more to get down for a 7.

17 shots on just two par 4s. Ridiculous!!

Still, ended only Net 4-over by the end of the round, and 35 stableford, but I wish these massive downers wouldn't keep happening and I could get a good all-round round under my belt!! At least I got plenty of pars to go on my Ecclectic score-sheet.

Unfortunately, that's golf. If, buts and maybes.

I am sure I should be on tour really. If only I could cut out the rubbish that keeps me on 11.

A lesson learnt in course management I feel. Think how well you'd have done taking an unplayable instead of trying the miracle shot. Still at least overall you seemed to be scoring well so take the positives out of the day

Was given the " if you hit a great provisional ball dont look for the first one" advice on Wednesday and its true, I also found my first and ended up with a 10. DOH

Had this at the 10th at Bearwood Lakes recently. Played the course 4 times now, and first time round I made a good par down there (par 4 longish hole). It's a beauty, and one of my favourites on the course.
2nd time out, made a 6 courtesy of a duffed drive, scuffed 2nd, bad chip and 3 putt.
Last two times out I have stood on the tee and thought about the good 4 I made down there the first time yet still walked off both times with 6's, scored almost identically to the first one.
Bloody hole is getting to me now.

I thought the rules stated that if you declare you're hitting a provisional, then you need to look for your first ball, (and I know you have to play it if you find it). But if you declare the first ball lost straight away and hit a second then you have to play the second ball? No?

(I need to read up on the rules properly!)

Sound like a fun two holes!!!

Just think, if you had taken a penalty drop, you probably would have stung your hand on the nettles when you were picking it up!

don't worry, Karma will level things out next time round

Oh, I got stung several times while picking up other peoples' balls that were lost in there. (Was one of the other good things to come out of the round. Me and the three others I was playing with probably hit 10 or 12 in the deep rough between us, and though I lost two balls I found at least 7...some half decent ones too, including a couple of Pro V1s and some Nike Ones.) ;)
