We always see people saying 'you're only supposed to buffer XX amount of times per year', but what would you class as a reasonable season?

So far this year (my first off a 3 handicap), from 20 Qs i have the following -

10 - .1s
7 - buffers
3 - cuts (totalling .7 in reductions)

In 5 of the .1s i have bogied the last hole to miss buffer by 1 shot!

In terms of my view of my year, i feel ok about it. but not great.

Whats your view? and opinion of my season?

Who cares about your season? It's all about me!!

Seriously though, an increase of 0.3 on the year, do you think that is a fair reflection on how well you have played?

I know you are very capable of putting a low score together but the 0.3 increase does surprise me, thought you had been hitting the ball well this year?

Just checked my stats this year

11 qualifying rounds

3 x 0.1 increase
3 x buffer
5 x cuts totalling 2.1

Gone from 5.9 to 4.1

All down to my impressive short game

Ive had a mixed season so far, been happy and disappointed at the same time. Started the year at 19.1.

Played 10 competitions so far this year.
4 0.1's
5 buffers
and one 0.9 cut

So I will end the year lower than I started which is a positive, but I've had about 3/4 comps where I have put myself in a position to win and get a cut and then blown up on the last 4 holes. I just need to get over the barrier of going low and putting a full good round together. But I have to take it as a good season.

Yeah I have but just keep hitting one or two loose shots per round which kills me. Not even with long clubs sometimes! The other week a lob wedge and sand wedge shot cost me 5 shots!!

I also had a bad weekend when I played 72 holes, and got .4!! So without those I'm .1 lower!

I'm close to a low one (shot -4 at worplesdon and was -6 with 2 to play).

Suppose I shouldn't be too dissapointed

12.3 to 13.3 so not a great year to date. Been stop start a lot of of the season with some health issues. Righting it off and not fussed where the handicap ends up this year and focus over the winter and start again in 2017

With a couple of qualifiers left I think I would say I have had a good season

12 qualifiers

3 x .1
3 Buffers
6 cuts with a total cut from 5.4 to 4.1

Won one non Q as well

Sitting nicely on top of the Order of Merit

Won two comps including one board and a number of other placings

Think can sneak a little bit lower in the couple of qualifiers left

Add on to that - semi finals in Foursomes , Scratch Semi as well

I would say looking at your stats Sam that you have had a solid season which with a couple more putts would have been a good season

Since beginning of April first Q comp I have played in 27 comps from nine and 18 hole point and medal comps.

12 plus 0.1s.
11 wins inc 2 overall wins.
1 runner up
4 div 3rds.
2.3 cuts.
dropped from start of season from
21.2 a 20.2 today
14 buffers.

have I had a good season, yup but to many comps won in the buffer zone for hcap to be reduced even more.

At the moment 4 th in the order of merit which means nowt to me, in the sense don't know what it means"

I've got plenty of golf left mate, at least another 10 q's. The season never stops when you're a member of a top class links course 😂

Great season for you if you ask me!

So far I have played 28 qualifiers, 10 of which have been on away courses. I have had 14 0.1 increases and only on 0.2 cut so it doesn't look like too good a season for me.
That said I feel I am playing well, just messing up a lot of rounds with one bad hole.
I have done well in opens though so its not all bad and I still have about 8 qualifiers left to turn things around.

I'd say any reduction in handicap has got to be a good year, but its all relevant isn't it.

As long as you're having fun, you're fit and and healthy, every day you play is a good day.

My season seems reminiscent of Louise_a's (without all the away games) and some good stuff in there for me marred by two or three bad holes. All about keep trying and hoping that sooner or later it'll come good. On the plus side, health wise 2017 looking much better and I can play at full fitness (or as close as I'll get these days) and can get back to getting my handicap down to

I echo the sentiments of TonyN in his last paragraph especially given the awful news on here yesterday.

If I start at beginning of Jan, I have had:

6 0.1s
5 buffers
2 cuts, totalling 1.2

Started in Jan off 6.8, and now off 6.1. 1 competition win, so fairly bang average really!

In terms of handicap:
8 x buffers
0.1's x 4
Cut from 25.4 to 19.6 (over 3 rounds) = 5.8

Have also won 2 medals, a full doubles tourny and a small doubles stableford,

BUT still in:
Leading our order of merit
Semi Final of Titleist Matchplay for my region
in a points final where I'm leading
in a doubles BB final

I would hope to win at least one of the above and also get cut to 19.4 to consider it a total success but guess I have improved and enjoying it regardless so it probably already is.

Coming to the business end of the season though I am struggling to score which is disappointing as if I had played these ties a month ago I would be confident of winning.

A good season for me is getting through it and still enjoying my golf regardless of handicap. It's just one measure after all.
If I got to cat 1 but wasn't enjoying my hobby then what would be the point?
It's a game, enjoy it, be happy to be out there.

That's success to me.

OP, it sounds like you're doing pretty good? Evidently you've kept pace with the minor changes that come from stepping it up a level in the rarefied air of low single figures - that's got to be a good result. If anything you talk about the really good stuff still to come?

My view is that a good season depends upon your goals and expectations. Chose wisely.

I like to learn a bit more about my game each year, play some excellent courses and enjoy good company - ticked all those boxes. I also like to win a trophy and get a cut of some sort - failed there (so far) as all I've done is go from 1.2 to 1.9. Small beer in life's larger picture, though. Did get picked to play in one county match which is always a nice bonus so I'm damned fortunate all said.

I have played a shedload of magnificent courses, starting with the whole Trump/Carnoustie trip and including Machrahanish and several others. so in that regard it has been a great season.

Played in 12 qualifiers so far, 5 +0.1s, 5 buffers and 2 cuts early on totalling 2.5. So the season started well, managed to win 1 comp in the springtime. Practising hard, so hoping for another wee cut before the end of the regular season.

On the matchplay side I've been p.poor - kicked out of all 6 comps at the first hurdle :o
Apologies to my long suffering foursomes partners.
