Hi Guy's

Just wondering after watching the Masters as to what competition in you're own club would you most like to win? Should it be

Captains Day
Presidents Day
Club Championship
or a mates sponsored cup.

Spring meeting - two rounds of medal in one day - tough comp, or the Auction, four ball better ball knock out where the winner gets about 3 grand (against at least 2 rules in the R and A rule book).

Odd comp the Auction. You pay 35 to enter per pair, and then you are sold off at auction for what ever you go for (around 300). All the money goes in the pot, (about 20 grand), and then the winning pairs buyer at auction gets money for every round you get through. If you want (and why wouldn't you) you can buy one third each of your selves back from your purchaser, and get 1/3 of the winnings.

Now, the interesting bit. There is a rule at the back of the rule book, which specifically bans such auctions. Therefore, as there is another rule which says any player who condones a breach of the rules for himself, or for another player is DQd, every one who enters should be DQd.

Top 16 qualified from a Sat greensome to play in a matchplay greensome type comp where your opponents picked your drive.

Got to the final, all square on 18, where my mate drove the green, I topped mine ten yards into the rough. To this day I still say he cost us the comp by failing to hit the green in 2. :D

Great fun if you play it in the spirit it was intended, but some do object when you force them to play the second shot all the time

Club championship is a 36hole affair, floowoed quickly by our captains day, If you can win it you are doing very well, the amount of eye patches and wooden legs present at the dinner that night is amazing.

It would have to be club championship although that is unlikely as it is a scratch event. However they do have another prize for the best net score in the event (36 holes) which is often more fiercely competed.

Of the others the Longhurst cup (after Henry Longhurst) is a 2 round stableford event and considered a significant prize each year. We have a 36 hole Masters event (stroke) for the winners of all individual competitions in the previous competitive year. Qualified last year but only finished mid-table.

I guess the other one to win is Golfer of the Year. Points are awarded for each event and so the better you do the higher you are in the rankings (think European Order of Merit). By winning this you demonstrate you have been the most consistent golfer of the year which I think is a pretty good test of your all round ability

Either you have lost me on that auction comp or you are breaking the amatuer rules with regards to prize money or sailing bloody close to breaking them, winners then turn Pro then?.....like the idea(I think) tho .Any chance of simplifying it on a reply post? :D

We also have a comp which is three rounds (Sat, Sun, Sat)of greensomes, foursomes and then better ball. This is a good one to win to, since you have to be good at so many discplines. It is also a lot of fun.

Last year in the foursomes I put my partner into neck deep greenside bundu for two, and he hit it out to 6 feet from the pin. Impressive stuff. I was so surprised he had got it out that I missed the putt by a mile.

Scratch Matchplay....no question....

I took some big scalps (when off 9) one year including a 4! Made the semi's twice. Much harder work at my new club and given my less good h'cap.

Only play on Wednesday Medals at my club as I'm only a 5 day member...

....but I do play in some friendly comps with pals. We have a year long "League of Gentlemen" which stretches to 9 events usually.

Won a couple of them last year and snatched the league trophy on the final event. This is the individual one I treasure most.

The Pitstop Trophy !!

Handcrafted from car parts by my golfing buddy who's a mechanic and ardent Tivosi. In honour of his Birthday event. It's a cracker, don't you think?

Lovely trophy, Is that a top flite on top? I would of thought a gear knob would of been better. Seeing as the rest are car parts.
I would love someday to win Captain's day considering I'm playing of 2, but I may have to wait until I get a few shots back.
Club Championship is my greatest victory thus far. Can I defend it? I shall be trying!

I have my Season Competition schedule drawn up for the season and out of the 50+ events I'm entered into, heres my four Majors.

The South Cliff Classic - 4 Day medal event off full handicap - like a proper Tour event, with cut on friday, leaders go out last on saturday and sunday. This is my Open Championship. HOW COOL IS THIS GOING TO BE! Held a week before Birkdale so really going to get me in that Open mood.

The Club Championship at South Cliff - Scratch medal over saturday and sunday but prizes for best net and gross each day too - This is a toughie so the US Open for me - just want to get under my handicap and shoot a solid two days.

The Flaneburg Masters at Flamborough Head, one day medal off handicap. My old track at Flamborough on the east coast is holding a masters tournament over its windy and tough links course - a Blue Jacket is the prize for the winner!

The 12th Bert Hopper Memorial Cup at Lebberston Golf Club - I'll be going back as defending champion this year at my old course. A little 9 hole course, where you play round twice, stableford. Its to raise money for British heart foundation too - the course is short but very tough in the wind so I'll be happy to retain my title.

So thats my Grand Slam - this is going to be the year of all golfing years :)
