I am going to play som courses near Portsmouth at easter, have limited space in the car as have to get clothes etc for 4 people in, so cant fit 2 normal bags and full set of clubs. Can just get 2 pencil bags and 7 clubs in each. Playing fairly standard length courses and have to make a choise on the clubs , so to cover all eventualities was going to go with Driver, 5 wood, 5,7,9 and 52deg + putter or 4 wood, 4 ,6,8, 52 and 58deg.

What would others take if limited on clubs ?

give it a try a few times and you will see that you often don't use all the clubs in the bag anyway. I often play a few holes at night over the summer with just a hald set of irons only and you would be surprised how well you cab still score

Doesn't matter as long as you have a spread of lofts through the half set. Leave the driver behind and take 3 wood instead - you'll score better without it.
By missing some irons may be a good way of learning some knock down shots, bump and runs etc.

What courses did you choose to play in the end?

Cams Hall and probably Rowland Castle all quite close and not too expensive we might even fit a quick trip to Furzeley if we get chance (I like the course not too challenging and can play with 4 clubs)

If it was me I'd try the following:

Driver, 3 hybrid, 5,7,9 irons, 52 wedge, putter

I did this for a practice round about 3 years ago and had my second best score of the year (+2 gross)

It's very interesting to see how much the score is actually close to normal

can you not stick the other clubs along the rear parcel shelf ???? just for the journey.

a few irons wouldn't take up that much space and I'll lay ten to one that you will regret leaving one or two of them whilst standing over a shot ;)
