Having a bit of a difficult time making this decision.

My bag is, Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, 20* & 23* rescues, 5-PW Irons, 51* 56* & 60* wedges & putter which is obviously 15.

For me it is a choice between 3 wood an pitching wedge.

I rarely use my 3 Wood as my drives on the reachable par 5's usually leave a 5 wood and the 3rd par 5 is unreachable in 2 except you absolutely cream a drive and 3 wood.

As for the pitching wedge, I don't seem to get it out often at all and I think I can always open the 9 iron up a bit or close the 51* slightly.

What do you reckon?

i Think i would be going with what i have less confidnece in or what i dont use so well. For me that would be the 3 wood, i love my pitching wedge!

Hi Medway, Depends on what course you play i suppose, I have had similar dilema recently, and dropped my 3 wood, as i was inconsistant with it, and couldnt hit it off the deck like my 5 wood, which is a great versatile club, i have kept my G5 3 wood with a view to using on certain courses. But my current line up is below, but am also considering a 60 degree lobber as think at my handicap should chuck one back in (had one before but didnt get on) Do you use your 60 Deg?

Definitely one of the wedges, you wedge perv. You'll benefit from it, you'll soon get your distance control with just 3 or even 2 wedges. The rescue clubs are a good idea to keep and i'd feel uncomfortable giving up any of my irons 3-pw. You won't miss a 3 wood I wouldnt have thought - I played my 2001 season with a only a Titleist driver, an adams 5 wood, 3-sw blades and a ping putter and it was the most successful one I had up until this one. Theres alot to be said for dropping a club or two and working on your shot making.

Thats a toughie MWJ.

My bag is similar to yours, but I only have two wedges (54/58) so don't have to make the choice. I I did though it would be the 5 wood, but 12 months ago it would have been the 3 wood but have found one I really get on with - post this again next month for a different answer. I used to be indecisive, but am now just not sure .

Defo the 20° rescue. It can't be much different to the 5 wood anyway (normally 18°). Wedges are nice, but with 5 woods, you are a bit over head covered in the bag.

If the lie is good, hit the 5 wood, if the lie is bad, the 20° probably won't come out much different to the 23°, so hit the 23°.

Sorted.

I only carry sw, pw 60* i find i dont have any trouble gapping at all. i just use 3/4 swings as well as half and full, that is 9 distances from 3 wedges. I went to the range a few weeks ago to record em all. Now i have a new swing i added yardage so needs doing again! Could never get my lob wedge further than 60 yards with out thinning it, now am hit it about 75

Good man - 3/4 swing is one of the keys to scoring well. Its a personal preference but the lowest club I give a full swing is my 5 iron, everything else is a 3/4 swing - I wouldnt dream of it with a 9 or PW.
Watch Tiger Woods play a par 3 next time he's on - he'll NEVER hit a full shot with an iron, always a little 3/4 shot. Its worth a try if you havent already - handicaps will be falling down all over the country. Lower ball flight, crisper strike, stops after one bounce - birdie range :D

Get rid of the 56 wedge if you don't want to sacrifice the 3w or 5w. Trust me, you won't miss it and you can always pop it back in depending on the course. I also have 52, 56 and 60 wedges and it's the 56 that I've dropped and can honestly say I haven't missed.

Depending on the loft of your 5 wood, I would suspect that it and the 20 degree rescue are covering the same ground. As such, which you ditch is down to club preference. I carry a driver, 3 wood, 5 wood and 23 degree rescue.

If you are anything like me, the other option is to ditch the 60 degree wedge. Mine is too much of lottery and will only use it if I need to get the ball up very quickly. Do not think it has left the bag for 2-3 rounds so could quite happily ditch it.
