Hi All

Im desperate for some new clubs. I love my Wilson Di9 but ive practiced and played so much that I think I am no longer 'a beginner'

These are super game improvement irons and I hit them really well and far but what can I gain though if I move to better clubs, smaller heads etc?

Am I going to be more accurate/longer? I can work the ball a bit with these clubs at the moment.

Do I stick with them or will I benefit from moving up a notch to something like the Ci9s?

Mattie

If you want to change clubs that's fine, but don't expect it to improve your game overnight.

Why not go and hit a few in AG or similar, to see if you like how they feel.

So you've practiced and played a lot but are you getting better? What's you're handicap? How's your ball striking?

It's hard to say what you'll gain without knowing a bit more about your game.

What you'll get if you're good enough depends on which clubs but what I got is a better feeling off the clubface and a better more penetrating ball flight.

What you'll get if you're not is a higher score.

Ha de ha LOL!

Yeah I only started last year but I am at range 3 times a week as well as pitching/putting at home etc. Ive played a lot of new courses but when I play my 'local courses' I can go round in mid 80s easily.

My ball striking I would say is very good and a few single handicap players I know say I will be in single figures soon :)

My current clubs are great but I want something with a smaller head. I might go for a half set of new clubs, mizzys maybe and just replace the short irons for now :)

I know single figure golfers who still play with game improving irons. They won't swap to blades or any other sets of clubs because they're less forgiving.
Personal preference I suppose.

If you fancy a change then like it's already been suggested go and try a few but I'd say don't rush into it and make sure you can hit the new clubs consistently well without spraying it about too much.

Good luck :) :)

Just thinking about it.... You could do half and half sets if irons.
Have your longer irons more forgiving and your shorter irons less forgiving, that way you get the best of both worlds.

smaller irons,smaller sweet spot.

you dont hit the ball much further with them.

tbh you'l lose distance if your the slightest bit off sweet spot.

best sticking with what you have just now for the rest of the season and if you feel the times right buy a new set for next season

Mattie. Buy some new irons 'cause you like the look of them or the lofts on Di W/S irons are a joke. The rest is all hot air.

I just swapped my Mizuno CT's for MP58's.

Go further?
No, less far on miss-hits without a doubt.
Go higher or lower?
No, the same boring flight (which i like)
Easier to hit?
No
Can i shape the mid/long irons easier?
Yes - on side hill lies i really have to watch out for the curve now though where before i didnt have to so much.

My iron play has been pretty decent since getting them, lots of room to improve it though which is something i'm looking forward to as i get used to them (had the last ones 8 or 9 years). My woods however have turned to crap and i've really suffered the last week or so with them!

What do you play off. You say you go round most courses in mid 80's but is that in competitions when it matters? It depends what you are looking for froma set of irons. If you want the ability to shape a shot then a smaller (possible forged) head with smaller cavity should in theory allow you to do that. Personally I try and keep it straight (not today). There are too many choices out there and its personal choice. Apart from my current TP's I do like the I15's in particular, the S56 (although I couldn't get on with them) and you won't go far wrong with any of the Mizzy range. Try as many as you can and see what works. Don't discount so called game improver clubs. The G15 is one such club that is great

What will you get if you switch to 'better' clubs, given that you love these ones?

You'll hit each club shorter.

You'll hit each club more inconsistantly.

You'll probably score worse, but not necessarily.

And you'll almost certainly enjoy the game less than you are now.

But you'll have to put a brave face on it, coz you're part of the Mizzy or Titleist crew now. And they're proper golfers, they are. You can't admit that hitting the ball sweetly, long and straight is more fun than 'working' the ball round the course.

Just my opinion, but I'm right.

Hi Homer

The only comps I play are Golf Society at work and I play off 15 for them and I usually come 2nd or 3rd, couple of bad holes here and there. Im not a member at a course yet so my course management is not great as I tend to play new courses and always get caught out slightly, so ill maybe become a member somewhere next year.

If I continuw with my current 'mad enthusiasm' for the game I will hopefully get a lot better over the next year.

I think for now I will invest in 2 or 3 CG15 wedges and see how they go :)
