OK the white blocks are out and the handicap needs cut, Went out on Sat assured to get my Handicap down. I am 23.5 so 1 shot should be handy enough, no no no, I played one of the worst rounds in living history!! 56 front 9 and I just walked most of the back 9! I had a 3,4,5,6,7,8 &9 all in one round. When I got back to the club house I had a txt from HID who was on her way over for dinner, I was so annoyed I wanted to eat anywhere except the club :(

This morning I had a match, the first time I have properly played match play, after 2 we where 2 down (par birdie start for them)I thought we were going to get a thrashing we held our own till 9 then all of a sudden we both found our games. 2ft putt missed on 14 to go dormie but we won 3&2. I honestly can’t believe how well we played - how can a day make so much difference??

Any tips on match play as the partners told us we made a few beginners mistakes bud they never divulged any info.

I'm sure if you spoke to the guys you played today they'll help you out. At the end of the day asking is the only way to learn and improve (not meant as a dig!). I'm trying to think what areas they might have been questioning

I think if it had been rules you had broken they would have told you at the end at the very least, if not during the round. What they may have been inferring from their 'amateur mistake' statement is that you should think about how you actually play the game in terms of considering about putt concessions. Also was the comp a Four Ball Better Ball, (or a similar format, your posts suggest you were in teams), if so they may have been thinking along the lines of if one of you tees off with a driver and hits their ball out of bounds, the other should perhaps consider taking an iron to make sure their ball is in play. Also on par 5's maybe one of you should be going for the green and the other laying up etc.

Hi,
A few things for 4 ball match play if your partner is furterest from the hole u should always try to hole out first ie take your shorter putt first, first in the hole often wins also if you had a putt for 6 instead of picking up your ball if its on your partners line putt out give him some help if he has a birdie putt and u have a par putt u try and make yours before he putts give him a chance to win the hole with out any pressure as u have the par in the bag,
If u were breaking the rules they should have been penalising u as they went so it might just have been little things like that.

Ahh right, we just kept to the longer putt first, there is several times I now realise I should have putted to give my partner a line.

We broke no rules as we are pretty ok with the rules, unless of course they are different for matchplay, I understand that its the same rules with different outcomes.

Thanks.
