Got the club news email today from my old club which included this report from a team match. They didn't name the culprit but there's a very red face somewhere:

Away to [xxxxxxx club] it was always going to be tough - what makes it even tougher is losing the match due to a technicality. We should have won 4-3 but a member of the team hadn't realised that the extra club he put in his bag that morning put him over the 14 club limit resulting in his 1 up win being reversed and turning in to a 1 down loss.

Ouch! :o

Drayton Park? My mate was won his game so was not too pleased

Yup, that's the one. Not been over there this week so I haven't spoken to anyone, did your mate say how it came to light?

I just emailed him and asked.

This was his response :

The other player counted the clubs – it was a genuine error by XXXX. I know it doesn’t count for much but the 15th club XXX had in by mistake hadn’t even been used. For the bloke to then impose the penalty didn’t seem in the spirit but there you go.

At the end of the day if a rule has been broken it has been broken. The spirit of the game is that we govern and implement the rules ourself, no where within the rules does it say that we can implement or choose to overlook rules as and when we want.

Yes to claim the match because of this seems harsh, but what if I had done it then said "oops sorry mate, I forgot to take it out" when actually I had done it on purpose in the hope of getting away with it.

Ouch. I wonder if it would have been mentioned if he had lost 3 down, so the penalty wouldn't have meant anything?

For the record, in match play against people I don't tend to know...I will always count the clubs in the bag...

In Match Play you can choose to overlook a rule breach by your opponent

Rule 2 Match Play

2-5 - Doubt as to Procedure; Disputes and Claims

Note 1: A player may disregard a breach of the Rules by his opponent provided there is no agreement by the sides to waive a Rule (Rule 1-3).

My daughter probably played half a year of county/tournament golf with a little plastic child's club at the bottom of her big bag. Probably placed there by her two year old.
She contacted the county secretary who told her it was done and dusted and to forget about it.

it's also not a golf club so irrelevant

We're in the same group tomorrow aren't we at Mentmore? Tempted to stick a couple of extra hybrids in now ;)

But out of interest, do you really count them? Reason for asking is that I'm trying to put myself in the opponent's shoes here, I can sort of see how I might glance at the bag and think "that looks very full", then have a count. But surely at (or near) the start, not the end? And then, if you have counted, would you call it right at the end? That's quite a big dilemma, one should, because rules is rules. But does one? And with the match hinging on it as well? Can't decide if it's a gutsy call or a bit of an unpleasant one, guess a lot would depend on when you noticed. I just checked and the rules say that it's a maximum deduction of 2 holes, so did he wait until he knew he was just one down?

If it was me I'd like to think I'd mention it at the time and do it with an apologetic tone . To leave it to the end of the match is just not on :(
