Scott And Hughes Win Last Hole Thriller

David Hughes and Ben Scott, of Antrim's Massereene club, booked themselves a trip to the Bahamas with victory in the regional final of the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-Am Championship supported by SkyCaddie at The Heritage in Dublin.

But Hughes needed a birdie on the 18th to make sure of victory as he and Scott staged a late rally to pip John Dwyer and Mark Smith, of Ashbourne, into second spot.

Hughes is now in with a chance of winning the £5,000 first prize for the professionals at the grand final which takes place at Sandals Resort Emerald Bay, Bahamas, on November 23-28.

It rounded off a successful two days for Hughes who also qualified for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship on Tuesday also at The Heritage.

Afterwards Scott revealed the secret of the pair's success - he had actually caddied for Hughes in the Glenmuir event - and the pair took the chance to do their homework.

"We practised for a couple of days at The Heritage," said Scott, 20, who works as a barman in Massereene.

"But getting to caddy for him the day before the pro-am meant we could spot where the danger was going to be.

"When I qualified for this event, I didn't think we'd be getting this far but now we're heading for the Bahamas which is amazing.

"It was a tight finish but I felt we played pretty well."

Hughes, 23, insisted Scott had an outstanding round to help them to victory.

"I can't take all the credit for this, my partner played well and for a 10-handicapper, he can hit the ball a long way," he said.

"He's the perfect partner in fact - he does just what I tell him to do!"

Hughes admitted it was tense at the end however - and just how vital his birdie at the 18th was.

"I birdied the last two holes and if I hadn't sunk the one at the last then we would have lost on the countback," he said.

"We didn't realise how close it was until we got to the 18th and had a look over at the scoreboard.

"So it was a productive couple of days."
