Today was the new members event up at my new club and I can only say that if things continue like this then I have made a great golfing decision.
Turned up at 10.00 this morning for a few coffees and a bit of a meet and greet. Within half an hour I had met the chairs of all committees and the captain, had a good chat with them and discussed everything from the plans for the course to what functions were coming up and how to enter comps. Efforts were made to make sure that the new members were introduced to each other. By this stage a few numbers for potential games were in the phone.
Next off was a short 9 hole competition. Format was team stableford which was a good choice as was relaxed and plenty of chance to chat without being in competition with each other. Each team was a 4 ball with 3 new members and a committee member or long standing member in the group. More questions answered, bit of advice on how to tackle some holes and some more numbers in the phone.
Back to the clubhouse for a buffet and a couple of drinks. Got chatting to another member who has a regular group but one has gone in for knee surgery and may be out for most of the season so would I like to take his place in a team comp next Saturday and if I enjoyed myself join up with them for comps. Yes please so that is sorted.
There was plenty of banter going on at the speaches at the end and everyone was very friendly.
So there you have it, one well organised event and suddenly I feel more a part of a golf club than I ever did at Stoke and well on my way to integrating myself.
It all seems so simple so it makes me wonder why some clubs take your money, say 'there is a golf course, have fun' and do nothing more.
