A Pub in West Sussex has displayed outside on an advertising board, "We have the Pub, you bring the grub".

They have the tables and supply the plates and cutlery, and customers can either bring their own food or order from the local takeaways. Its all very friendly with games to play and books to read etc.

It seems a win win situation for customers pub and local takeaways.

Is it happening elsewhere, will it catch on?

Never heard of it, but sounds like a good idea to me. Grab some fish and chips and go and enjoy them in the beer garden on a summers eve with a pint. Thumbs up from me.

It's the opposite of restaurants that allow you to bring your own drink. Interesting idea and worth trying if you don't have either a kitchen or a chef. Anything that helps business.

Surely too many H & S issues to let people use their kitchen.

That's the beauty of the idea, Pubs don't have the expense of a working kitchen, just the basic sink and a few cupboards and without the high cost of staffing it.

I assume if you bring your own food it has to be cooked/served cold and you can't just wander into the kitchen and knock up a quick spag bol or something

Homer, trust you to complicate things! If you want hot phone the takeaway. ;)

There's a real ale pub in Birmingham city centre that doesn't do food but lets you bring in takeaways from the Thai restaurant opposite. They even provide cutlery etc.

Its a great idea and one I have never heard of to date. Gave it a few seconds thought and can't really see a downside for the Pub, customer or local eateries. Hope it comes my way soon. Let us know how it goes over time

Did this years ago in my old local in the west of Glasgow. Come 10pm we used to get a chinese from next door and sit and have a few more pints.

It wasn't strictly a policy it was more the owner turned a blind eye to ensure we spent more on grog.

Great idea.

Around us the pubs rely on food sales. Go for a beer and you feel you are in the way.:(

because unless you are a free house, there is very little profit in beer. If you are tied to a national supply chain, you have to buy their drinks, at their prices. The advantage of being a free house is you choose what you buy and where from. Even then though, beer is terrible for profits. More profit in coke and mixers. Food does 75% of our profits and we are a free house and purchase very savy. Would not dream of bring your own food at ours, but i can see in certain areas that may work, but it would need a serious increase in footfall and drinks sales.

I wouldn't choose to go to a pub like that - the experience of eating out is around the service you receive for me. I would hate to be sat at a table and loads of takeaway containers are strewn everywhere - think an Indian takeaway for a dozen people...mess everywhere!!

The pub still need people to clear up presumably so will have to have catering staff - otherwise the mess would be even greater.

I can see the reasons why they have done it, but in my opinion have copped out in their service offer.
