Seems this tournament is losing its draw on the very top names. Sadly none of Woods, Mickleson or Scott will tee it up this week, leaving only Stenson of the top 4 in the world playing. Shame as its one of the best tournaments to watch for me but the lack of big names means a lack of "giant killings"

Too early in the season I think

Also it's a high risk for all the players to get knocked out early

Think it's a great Tournament

I agree with you Steve.

It's one of my favorite tournaments on the tour and think it could be be better supported by the top names

Hence the reason we don't get more Matcbplay events...

A Chris Kirk vs Pablo Larazabal final, with all due respect to them, ain't gonna break many ratings records.....

Yep you're right

But so far we haven't seen many of those - in recent years there has always been at least one top player in the final

I think it just falls at a bad time. Many like Mickleson have played the California swing over the last 4-5 weeks and with the weather being as unpredictable, usually cold (remember the snow in the desert?) it perhaps isn't high on their list of priorities. I thought Woods might have played as he's had a few weeks off. I fancy Rose to do well this week.

No appearance money to blame ?

Has the biggest prize pool of the year and they sort of get appearance money as they get paid for losing in the 1st round! Obviously nothing like Woods received in Dubai or Germany for eg though.

Not sure Ive seen a reason given, I know Mickelson has been fighting an injury, and Scott chose to play the Australia events in January at the expense of this and several other tournaments (great to see someone like him support his home events), as for Woods guess he didnt fancy it or didnt fit his schedule for some reason

I seem to remember that previous events had a full turnout, and if someone missed the event they had a pretty good excuse, injury etc. It would be a real shame if the top players start missing the event, as it is good to see some matchplay comps.

Maybe because it's a Matchplay and there's a chance they'll not be there long is the reason some are skipping it.
Still, it gives some a bit lower down the rankings a chance to shine.

Looking forward to it even more this year with "he who shall not be named" not playing. Might get to see something of the other matches going on. Few quid on Hunter Mahan I think, won it before, lost in final last year.

Not looking too good for the fantasy league, everyone I fancy ends up playing another pick in the 2nd round.

Indeed, just been through my picks on the European Tour fantasy league, then jumped onto the PGA tour fantasy league for the brackets and found my European team is going to score badly this week.
