Guys,

do you use golf specific rain gear ?

The reason I ask is I've been looking for a jacket and trousers to wear when the weather turns really wet. Most of the half decent golf specific stuff seems to be a good couple of hundred for a jacket and trousers.

The reason I ask is I was in mountain warehouse this afternoon and a lot of their lightweight weather gear looks suitable. I tried a couple of jackets on and there was plenty of freedom to swing properly.

Most of it was 'breathable' which I know can be a problem with some of the cheaper golf weather gear.

And the big thing is it's a fraction of the price. £20 for trousers and £30-40 for a jacket, and it felt as good a quality as the stuff I've seen in pro shops.

Any advice ?

The bulk of the Golf gear is made from fabrics that don't make huge amounts of noise when you swing. This could be the major difference between Golf and Hiking gear. Apparently the rustling of a jacket can put you or others off.
The fact that its raining and you've got drops the size of peas splatting down on your cap obviously doesn't.....

I guess it depends if you play regardless of the weather, or if the waterproofs are for 'emergency' use only.

If the later, then the MW set would be fine. Unless you're a gear tart of course. If however you play all year, regardless of weather. Then it's probably prudent to go for more specific gear. I know our pro is selling the full Mizzy rainsuit for a ton now. Plenty around at a reasonable price.

You don't have to have Galvins or Sunice. But I do love my Galvins.

If it breathes, doesn't rustle and keeps the wet out go for the MW.Whilst Galvin and the like rely on golf snobbery, fashion and pay pro's to wear their kit to inflate their prices remember it is only to keep you dry.I'm not saying it isn't good gear cos it is top notch but do other people really care if someone is wearing top kit. It never bothers me. If I'm warm and dry that's all I need. I wear Proquip gear and it has never let me down, good prices as well.

The cheap jackets make you sweaty and some can be very noisy that's the only problem with them.
I was lucky and got a Helly Hansen jacket that's very light/soft/breathable and waterproof for about 40 quid (It's more a boating/hiking jacket but does the job should of been a ton)
As for my trousers i had a pair of Duratool workman pants that slip over my normal trousers cost a tenner.
I'm a bit of a fair weather golfer so i've only ever pulled them out a few times.
What i'm trying to say is this, if you look at the weather and decide to golf only if it's reasonable then get the cheapest set you can find.
If you golf everyweek come rain or shine then the expensive one's do become a reasonable investment.

Tried on my new Proquip jacket and trousers today, really
chucking it down, anyway suit was really good and only £100
from our pro shop!
Very impressed with the quality and fit considering I'm not the tallest guy in the world.
Defo good buy for £100!

Sounds good. I'll have to check out the Proquip gear.

The only time I tend to 'intentionally' play in the rain is in the comps, so probably don't need top end gear. This proquip stuff sounds like the job.

Unless I have paid bundles on a society day, my waterproofs get me back to the club house, as I hate playing in the rain. As a result, I have footjoy red label, and they are fine. Ebay is a great way to buy waterproof golf gear.

Second the above, FJ Red Label Jacket and Trousers, trousers are good enough to wear as trousers when it looks like its going to rain, saves on hassles of putting on and taking off 9 times in a round ;)

I've got a Woodworm jacket and trousers, bought separately.
The trousers are fine but the jacket isn't breathable (or not sufficiently) so in warm wet weather you may as well not wear it. The sleeves are also very narrow, fine for not interfering with the swing but a sod to get off.

I've also got some heavier Tog24 trousers which I wear in winter, waterproof and warm enough to wear instead of.

I'm looking for a new, summer-weight jacket.

I'm maybe looking at getting a Sunderland GT Pro 11 jacket. Anyone use this type? I know Sunderland are a good make - I've got an old jacket of theirs, its just getting a bit tired.

Imurg I have the Sunderland GT Pro 11 trousers and they are great, in fact I tend to wear them alone rather than over trousers. The Jacket I beleive is the heavier type of waterproof and if like the trousers excellent.

I tend not to wear a waterproof jacket as I hate playing in long sleves but I am tinkering with getting a Stuburt rain shirt but my experience with Stuburt waterproofs isnt excellent.
