Just seen Lee Westwood has posted this on twitter and i couldn't agree more with him and it's nice to see someone speak their mind rather than sitting on the fence.

"Sorry 140 letters is not going to be enough for this rant! Just seen Ricky Fowler has been given rookie of the year! Yes he's had a good year but rory mcilroy 3rd in 2 majors and an absolute demolition of the field at quail hollow! Oh yes and on the winning Ryder cup team! Please! Is this yet another case of protectionism by the pga tour or are they so desperate to win something! Wouldn't have something to do with Rory not joining the tour next year? Maybe the PGA tour just employs the same voting process as FIFA! Come on , fairs fair! "

It was always going to be Fowler, its an American thing get over it and get on with it.

I do agree that Rory has achieved more this season, but is he still classed as a rookie?

Apparentley vijay singh got rookie of the year when he was 30 so i'm sure you could still class rory as a rookie as it was his first full year on the pga tour.

First year on PGA tour, so yes!

Edit: In that case that would make Westwood eligible if he ever took up a PGA tour card!

Surely that can't be right? Is there an age limit?

Whilst I agree with Westwood I think he's acted very unprofessionally by opening up this debate on twitter.

I'm sure he was fully aware of what he was doing. And he probably doesn't care, since he's committed to the European Tour next season.

Fair play to him. Not enough is said in situations like this.

im agreeing with aztects here, far too many pro sportman are forced to hold their opinions in fear of p***ing someone off. unfortunately in modern sports a competitors opinion isnt wanted anymore, and its the same in most sports. The powers that be make the decisions unlike yester-year when the opinions & feedback was welcomed. fair play to Lee putting himself out there, after all he is the worlds No 1 and surely he has worked hard enough to be able to have an opinion.

Good to see someone actually come out and call it as it is. Nothing more than protectionism from the PGA powers. I think had McIlroy decided to play on the US tour next year he might have got the nod

I agree homer, i think if he was playing there he would have got it. Americans can be very insuler. Look at their coverage of the ryder cup for example, only showing the shot the yanks play, or when they won a hole. There golf coverage is the same too, they would rather show a yank in last place than a european who is winning or at the top of the leader board. I am glad Westwood came out and said what he did, though it will inevitably fall on deaf ears!!

Well said Westy. It's about time some golfers are allowed to have opinions instead of people voicing often ill informed opinions about them. Isn't it good to see the World No.1 supporting the European Tour in this way.

Actually, I think twitter is the ideal medium - clearly a personal opinion rather than any media/corporate angle, and a spontaneous reaction. Can't see that it's in any way indiscreet or offensive. (And taught me about that long tweet facility - could be tempting!)

Funny seeing Westy going Twitter mad having not used it until a few weeks ago he's now starting to make Poults look like an amateur.

I assume that it is PGA young player of the year. Save for Quail Hollow what has Rors actually done in the US. Yes he's had some good performances in the (co-sanctioned) majors, but otherwise he has split his time between both tours and as a result has not reaped the rewards his talent deserve on either. Remember all of the uproar when Rors announced that he'd be taking up membership on the PGA Tour this season? In all honestly he may has well have just existed on invites and concentrated on the European Tour. Clearly he has taken good advice and will do this next year. Watch his results improve as a result.

The above may be a little off topic, but would show, in my opinion, that Rors is not a shoo-in over Fowler simply due to a few results. I don't know the stats, but Fowler must have made a huge number of appearances this year and must have more than a couple of handfuls of top ten. Add this to a fantastic final three holes in the singles at Celtic Manor, and an American panel presenting the award and you're right, there only was one winner, and that was Rickie Fowler.

It's a bit more even that Westy makes out.... they have both had 5 top 10's on the tour, and whilst Rory has won 1, Ricky supported the PGA tour more by playing in 25 events to Rory's 16. This is probably the reason why Ricky finished above Rory in the Fed -Ex cup standings.

At the end of the day, I'd have loved Rory to have won it , but if it was roles reversed and an American was in contention for rookie of the year in Europe against Mannesero, having played 16 of the 40 odd tournaments,,,,who would you want to win???

To be fair he's right and although Fowler is a top young player, Mcilroy has been superb this season and any vote should be based on this seasons performance and not next years commitment to the tour.

As for FIFA whilst all the board members have got their noses in the trough nobody on the inside will oppose.
