Wentworth SOLD for £135M

Spot the classic Daily Mail blunders/'half-job' comp?

There were 4 or 5 'errors' that I could see with a quick glance.

Are these some of the ones you talk about..

This is a great line,

The club has strict etiquette rules – no tracksuits, leggings or baseball caps worn the wrong way can be worn on its fairways – and a round on the West Course will set you back £360.

does the person who wrote this know anything about golf, you mean etiquette rules like most private clubs.

This quote is a peach too... "player tees off in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the home of English golf" from the picture that looks like Westwood hitting an approach into the 18th, not teeing off. Also I thought the of English golf was Woodhall Spa seeing as the EGU is based there....😋

Woodhall spa the home of English golf.

Wentworth home of the European tour hq, not too much to get wrong, typical lazy journalism by the daily mail yet again.

They really sell golf well by mentioning the expensive rounds and the celebrities, no wonder golf still has a stuffy image. Does my head in

The etiquette line merely establishes their 'anti-posh' credentials so I didn't count that.

Definitely a blunder about the 'tee' shot into the 18, though being about 280-285 (it's 255 to the front from that bunker) and an iron, I expect it was a lay-up.

As for home of 'English Golf', perhaps, though some members of a more traditional club nearby refer to Wentworth as 'the Pay and Play down the road'. It didn't mention EGU though, so a bit of an over-reaction there LQ!

Some old pics (Gallagher for example) and the one stating how it's one of the 'world great' was of the South/Edinburgh course - and an old one at that. I don't believe Faldo lives there, though he did at one stage and has had houses nearby, including one neighbouring Elton John. Their tranquility was/is under threat from the plans (of a Wentworth member) for a Caravan Park to be created on adjoining land!

The company purchasing Wentworth already owns Pine Valley and, I believe but am by no means certain, one of the founders used to own a chunk of Sussex countryside with private course - since 'let return to nature'.

But the topic ticks several of the DM's 'prejudice' boxes, so certainly something of interest to them! It's scary realising how, on a topic I have a little knowledge about so many errors and corruptions can be identified, it's likely that a similar amount of errors and corruption is almost certain to be happening on their articles on topics I know less about, so depend on journalists for accurate info!

Daily Mail is tosh. I wonder what/if the new owners will change anything. They must have some plans or you wouldn't invest all that dough. Surely West course fees won't go up again? There again there will always be those mad enough to pay
