Has any one heard of this ?

Guys we played with today told a story of friend of theirs playing there . As they were a two ball they went out with two members and the members asked if they wanted to play for a Wentworth fiver.
They agreed and game to and fro'd and the match was won the 18 th by the visitors. The one member aplogised for not having any cash and would a cheque be ok ? Yes sure no problem. the guest was somewhat gobsmacked to see that the cheque was made out for £500  The other member paid in readies !!

Myth or true ?

Have you heard of it then , the myth that is ?

No. And I know sufficient members, both gamblers and non-gamblers, to have heard of it.

So its existence is a myth as far as I know.

There are not many 'big money' gamblers there at all - mostly £20 with Presses or £20/20/20. One notable exception at £100/hole on occasions, though it's all 'book' money - none actually changes hands on the day!

Oh and Mark Roe and Marcel Siem trying to be the first to sink a bunker shots for up to £400 a time!

And their friend playing at Wentworth never thought to ask what a Wentworth fiver was before taking the bet? Because I sure as hell would.

I've heard similar myths about Wentworth but for one/one/one........hundred.

I have played in the States with 3 guys, 2 of which were continuously gambling on longest drive, nearest pin etc etc on most holes. One guy came out over $300 dollars up. I asked them if this was normal and how often they played. He said yes every game and twice or three times a week

Yanks gamble on anything, I played with 3 of them at Orange County National in Florida who were playing skins with each other not for the money you mention though jus $1 a hole, i wasn't asked in but was asked if i wanted to be in their "buck a birdie" comp where everyone pay's a player $1 for every birdie they have, I said ok, no birdies for any of them and 3 for me, easy money ;)

Correct....nearer 40 years.
Amateur member John Davis used to play the top Pro's for £1000 a game and generally win in those days

another embellished myth?

I knew a guy who heard of someone who played a guy at Stoke Park for a gold bar! both very well off, one had a Rolls Royce and the other drove an Aston Martin.

I've heard much the same story but in the end the mad man was on top of the car with her boyfriends severed head in his hands. Or perhaps I ma getting my urban myths mixed up a bit...

He was a mate of Mike King's from memory, and he would gamble on anything. I know he plays with Sam Torrance a lot, and they have some decent bets.
