Had the pleasure of playing Welwyn Garden City GC today with Imurg & CVG, hosted by that all round good egg Arnold Armchewer
Situated close to the A1 north of Hatfield, it is easily accessible by road
We arrived hoping for a bacon buttie, but the kitchens dont open until 10, However the halfway hut is only 200 yards away and the lady there , Sue does the bestest bacon rolls in christendom, also very good price, 3 rolls and a cuppa for a fiver. Happy Days
The par 70 course is very pretty, certainly undulating, but not a slog at all, its not long at 6069 off the whites (where we played from) or 5854 off the yellows, 5 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 3 par 5's.but every hole is a different challenge, with excellent bunkering and use of the natural topography, founded in the late 1920s it is a lovely mature parkland course.
It can be tight in places but an accurate tee shot is rewarded well, the greens are in very good condition and true, quite fast in places, especially if the pin position is on a slope
A second visit to the halfway hut after the front 9 confirmed our opinion of the bacon rolls
We played on a dry sunny day with light winds, for early April and considering the wet winter, the course was in immaculate condition,
In short, a course you can have a lot of fun on, I just wish it was on my doorstep
Thanks again to Arnold Armchewer (Steve) for hosting, a proper gent
