Was reading an American site today that suggested manufacturers weigh standbags without the stand attached and this is the weight they use when advertising the bag?

E.g. A bag might be advertised as weighing 4 lbs but with the the stand attached it might actually be 5.5 lbs

Anyone know if this is correct information?

I don't know if its true but the majority all seem to be a variation on a theme and so all weigh approximately the same. I normally ask to put some clubs in the bag and see how it sits and feels before purchasing

I've a Sun Mountain 3.5 which I've used very little recently. Out of interest I got it out and emptied it and then weighed it. Was 5.2 lbs.
Which is certainly heavier than what I thought it would be.

But it's only a pound, 450grams or thereabouts.
You're going to stick 10-20lbs of steel and plastic into it

The odd pound here and there isn't going to make a difference.......

No major difference but found it interesting as I was under the impression that 3.5 stood for 3.5 lbs. This is what Sun Mountain would have you believe

After hitting the gym all week, my weekend round with a carry bag on my back is a walk in the park... literally

No in honesty I don't know it's there and it never fatigues me.

My bag is apparently pretty heavy. But whatever, I'm young (ish) and fit so it's no bother.

However I was considering a new bag and weight was one of the factors I was considering, I figure why not buy a lighter bag if it otherwise does the same job, might as well carry a lighter load.

I think this is pretty scandalous to be honest. Some of then do major on weight in their advertising. Its a pretty underhand trick.

Imurg hits the nail on the head - if you want a lighter bag on your back leave a club or your brolly behind, the weight of the bag itself is irrelevant.

It's a bit like all the MAMIL's paying thousands of pound for the latest super lightweight Carbon Fiber frame to lug their 2 stone of beer belly around on.

Leaving a club behind or a brolley means you then have to manage without that club or get wet if it rains. Both those items have a practical use. You could carry less balls, or less water but again you'd have to manage without.
Buying a lighter bag is a way of reducing the weight with no other impact. It's definitely a legitimate discussion.
