hi all this is my first post here. I am getting married in September and I'm looking for a bit of a pre-wedding weekend away with closest friends and family (not a stag do that's already in motion). my question is where would you guys recommend. I've looked at the belfry but seems to be a bit of a 'has been' place now, and don't want to travel any further than celtic manor approx. 4hrs from York. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome along and congrats on the forthcoming nuptials. What level of standard are you and the group? Somewhere like the Forest of Arden near Birmingham (Marriott hotel) may suit. It has a championship standard course and a shorter, more player friendly one. Birmingham is only about 20 minutes in a minibus/cabs away

thanks for the reply, we all play off between 12 and 20 but also need somewhere that hires buggies (my dad can't walk a course any more). arden has been mentioned I think it is going to be a toss up between either there or celtic manor, I was just wondering is there anywhere I have overlooked.
 
Where are you travelling from?
I drove from Birmingham to slaley hall just outside Newcastle. stayed over night, Played two rounds of golf then travel a short way for a overnighter in newcastle.

Lets just say its was a great stag weekend

Oh amd dont rule out the belfry. The belair night club is........... Well, lets say perfect for a group of guys!!

All courses are in great condition too

travelling from just south of York (Selby) I haven't ruled it out yet there are a couple of big drinkers coming and sounds to me like dick turpin works behind the bar there!! it would be my choice to play the brabazon but I'm one of those people who tries to make everyone happy ;)

I'd put the Belfry above Celtic Manor, especially after the hotels re-vamp.

I've heard very good things about Forest Pines, but I've not been there myself.

Or you always go to somewhere like Woodhall Spa.

They'll all do you for beer prices. Think CM was about £4.40 for a pint of Fosters.

I would not do Celtic Manor for you dad as very hilly and you have to keep buggies on a path, which is a real pain and still means a fair bit of walking
 
We just booked East Sussex national on a very good deal.

£139 a head
2 rounds of golf, evening meal on the first night and breakfast before the second round.

This was a Saturday/Sunday package, if we dropped to Sunday/Monday or a weeknight stay it was £99 a head
 
I did a weekend at Bryn Meadows, not too far from Celtic Manor, last summer. It was a a lovely venue, small, but ideal for smaller golf groups. Great restaurant, 2 bars; one sports bar showing footy and golf, other was in the restaurant with the big old comfy chairs.

Best part of it was £99 a head, Sat to Sun, one night dinner 2 rounds and breaky. Food was delicious. Hilly, but buggies aren't restricted to paths.

We played mid summer and had high 20's temp both days. Greens were like glass. Beautiful.

We only have 3 single seat ride on buggies available so that might be an issue.
 
The Vale Resort at Hensol is always my recommendation to this sort of question, two good courses and a lovely hotel with spa. You can hire buggies and drive anywhere on the fairways so no problems there. Only downside is that is may be too far as it is about another 30 minutes or so past Celtic Manor on the M4.

tewo other places to consider are Bowood House, not sure about buggies though and Manor House at Castle Combe - buggies on path only. Both are excellent courses but MH especially

I played Manor House a while ago, I agree it's a nice course but I was carrying and found a couple of the hills really tough, not sure if they have buggies and if so what there policy is?
 
Forest Pines is very good, although it has been a couple of years since I have been. If you don't fancy The Belfry, and don't fancy travelling a long way it is perfect. Suitable for all players too
