Hi all!

im new to the forum and was looking for some advice on wedges.
in my bag i carry a pw and sw that came with my irons. i am thinking about getting some vokeys as i gather they are the best. is this true? if not, what other wedges are on par with them?

i dont know the loft of my pw or sw. am i right to assume the pw would be about 46 and the sw 56?

if this is the case? would i only need a 52 degree wedge?

sorry for all the questions so early on!

by the way, i love the forum and and its extremely informative!

thanks in advance sean

Welcome to the forum borntorunsean

My PW is lofted at 48* and my SW is at 56*

The SW was from my old set of X12's as this set I didn't come with a SW

What I have just done is ordered new wedges 52* 56* & 60*. The 52 is a gap wedge, filling the gap between the PW and SW, the 56 will replace my old SW, and the 60 is obviously a lob wedge. I wouldn't recomend just having a 52, if it's only one wedge your after, I would say the 56 is the most versatile.

With regards to make, I don't think you can go wrong with Vokeys, but this new order for me are Taylormade Z TP's

I put a 52 in my set up (see sig below), and apart from the putter is the most used club in the bag. The 60 is a difficult beast to tame, but is great out of greenside bunkers.

PWs are quite 'strong' nowadays, between 46 and 48 typically, so the 52 sits between the PW and SW which is normally a 56.

Hope that helps a bit.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

I think you are right in looking to the Vokeys, they are great clubs but you get what you pay for as I think the 09 models are around £99.

Are you on a budget? I'd advise going to your local pro shop or american golf and asking if you can demo a few brands in your budget. The thing about wedges is that 'feel' is so important, so it really makes sense to try them out and pick one best suited to you rather then us!

Having said that a recent thread on MD wedges is worth while reading.

Hi,
Have just received my MD golf wedges today so i will let u know how they are after the range tonight i got a 52 56 and 60, the MD wedges are supposed to be the highest spinning you can get so hope they will suit the hard greens on my course they have won quite a lot of awards (from the other magazine not sure if we are allowed to mention it on here but check out there reviews there) and are a lot cheaper than most of the top brands.

When I bought my first Vokey wedges I could not hit them for toffee and was taking strips of turf 2ft long. I just found they dug into the ground to easy.
I know it was partly to do with my swing but since I have renewed with some new Vokeys with a lot more bounce and I absolutely love em !!!!!

Get some and get it spinning !!!!!!! :D

Welcome to the forum Sean.

There are a number of things to consider when choosing wedges.

Can I ask what clubs you have and maybe we can find out what lofts they are. Once you know your lofts, it would probably make sense to get your wedges in lofts that are evenly spread (i.e 5* between each wedge)

I carry PW at 47 GW at 52 and A SW at 58. The SW doubles as a LW for me so I have no need to carry a 60*

I used to have to carry 4 wedges because of how my X20's were lofted.

What your also have to consider is your budget, and how well you hit them.

You cant beat trying the clubs out, I would try as many as possible and dont be put off the ones you hit best if they aint a name you were looking for.

Welcome Sean,

My PW is 44.5* & SW 54.5*

I had my 52* srixon wedge changed to a 50* and bought a cheap (£30) MD Cobalt 60* wedge which I had regripped with added tape and bobs ya uncle.

Vokey wedges are very unforgiving but are one of the brands people want as they create so much spin, but if I was you try as many as you can and if you find one thats best for you go online and order it or get AG to customer fit it.

Just picked up my new wedges this afternoon. They do look sexy, much better looking than the Vokeys :p The teardrop shape is practicaly identical it's the back of the club thats the difference.

I'll let you know how I get on with them after the weekend.

Welcome to the Madhouse!!

And don't forget bounce.

That's the angle between the leading edge and the ground. A low bounce (4-8 degrees) is better for tight fairways or if you have a very shallow swing and take almost no divot. Higher bounce (10-14) is needed for lush grass, bunkers (unless they are firm or wet) and a swing that takes a lot of divot. Higher bounce stops the club digging in. Too low a bounce and you may not be able to transfer enough power to the ball as the club will dig in. Too much bounce and you could thin the ball and break someone's kneecaps!

Experiment!!!

Try different makes and decide what YOU like, forget "brands".
Before you order anything get AG/DG to do a loft check,
Order the lofts based on the result.
