I was reading in Todays Golfer that it is recommended amateurs carry three wedges. 47, 43 and 58/9.

I currently have a PW (44) and a SW (54). Do I need to get an AW (48) or a LW? My Nike Coverts didn't come with an AW or a LW, and to be honest I've not seen any in the UK where I can get them individually.

Like a lot of things in golf its really up to personal preference, there is no set, you need this, you must use that etc, its what you are comfortable with.

I used to have PW, 56 Sand and 60 Lob, decided to put a 52 gap in there but really didn't make any use of it. the last few years ive dropped the 52, added a 2iron, and settled with a PW, 54 sand and 60 lob.

Yeah I guess that's true. I currently don't have anything less than a 5 Iron in my bag, excluding my Driver. I have no 3W or Hybrid yet, but I plan to get that soon.

I think I just want to build it up slowly as I develop my game. Hybrid club is my priority though, I was just wondering if an AW would benefit me at this stage, but again I guess it's down to how my game is currently.

To be honest, I hit 40 balls in the garden yesterday with my SW and I shanked nearly every one.

I wouldn't bother personally. Pw and sw will do you fine for now. If, further down the line you feel you need something with a bit more loft around the green or you want to fill a yardage gap then go for it but an extra wedge is far from a necessity.

Fair comments, I'm still trying to work out yardage on my current clubs, range can be misleading sometimes. Be awesome if my range had some kind of ball tracker so you can actually see how far your hitting the thing.

Hope you don't have neighbors near by :smirk:

Ha ha, well I have quite a long garden, and I put my target quite far back. My first one was sweet and hit the shed roof, and I think that may have then played with my mind and I was afraid to hit the thing. Range may be the best place to go today.

I carry 3 wedges.. PW @ 45, GW @ 52, SW @ 58.

I had a yardage gap between PW/SW which meant having to blooter a full-bloodied SW, or try to control a half-PW with varying results. The GW addressed that and I feel a lot more confident from short range that I can hit the necessary yardages with more consistency.

For me it depends on course set up, if you play a long course it might be more advantageous to carry more length and fewer wedges or at a shorter course a your long irons might be completely redundant so fill your bag at the bottom end.

GW = gap wedge? which is an AW? I suppose I won't know until I get out there and play some more.

I have 4 wedges:

47 (PW) - My go to club for a 100 yard full swing
52
56 (SW)
60

I like to use a full swing whenever I can, and had room in the bag for 4 so thought why not. Means I can take a full swing at various points between 100 and 60 yards without having to complicate matters by changing tempo or backswing length, etc... Under 50 yards I'll play a long chip shot with a 9 iron that rolls out only the green.

NB: This is the theory, what happens in practice is another matter!

not being funny but an aw or lw should be below a hybrid on your list of priorities.

It is. :)

Very true. :)

I have 3 specialist wedges. 52,56,60. I don't count my PW as a wedge as its probably more like a 9 iron in old money.

I use all of my wedges and use a different one based on a number of factors, lie, distance, height required, landing etc.

I am going to start the Pelz theory but slightly adapted, where you have 3 swings (7:30, 9:00 and 10:30 backswing) for 3 clubs, so you get 9 distances (his theory uses 4, so you get 12) Just need to go and "set" all my distances. This will of course then be dependent on the above conditions first, but assuming from a decent lie with no danger, i will be using this "technique"

ah, sorry. my advice then, two hybrids, say 22/23 and 18/19 !

they will help your game much more than an extra wedge at this stage. later when you can hit those 40 wedge shots without fail, you should think about adding another wedge.

the hybrids will be a lot more use to you over the winter! maybe next spring would be a good time to add in a wedge.

I've got 4 wedges in the bag, as per my sig below, I like to get the ball in the air around the green hence why I have a wedge for all occasion.
