Evening all,

Just watched a Mark Crossfield video, 'How to choose the right wedge' and thought I'd put a similar question to you rabble.

Assuming most play the PW that matches their irons, how do you choose/decide on the wedge setup for the remaining clubs in your bag? Match lofts based on your PW to provide consistent gapping? How do you determine the bounce you need on your wedges? How many wedges do you carry and why?

I currently go from a 45' PW to a 52' and 58' wedge. Moving from the chunky G20 PW to the thin profile of the Tour-S is a bit like going from the girl in the kebab shop to a page 3 bombshell, but I like the girl in the kebab shop and am not at all comfortable fumbling around with her skinnier cousins. Look out For Sale thread...

So, how do you determine what wedges to play?

your just not good enough to use them yet so go for ping g20 gap wedge which is 50 degree, g20 sand wedge 56 degree and they also do a lob wedge 58 degree all have massive soles and lots of bounce. keep them until you improve

Kept with the same make and kept the gaps the same.

My PW is 46 so went for 50 , 54 and 58

It all boils down to how you like to play your shots. Short game geniuses like Seve could do anything with one club, others are only comfortable hitting a more limited range of shots and therefore need more wedges. With modern stronger lofts, most PWs are really 9 irons so nothing wrong with having 3 more wedges if that makes you feel comfortable.

Bottom line is you have to hit the shots so go with the setup you want not what other people tell you you must have

have to pull you up on this. many can play the range of shots, they just have to manipulate the clubs less with a wider range of lofts. :swing:

I don't think I can be any clearer! Phil Mickelson could play with one wedge. he would have to manipulate it a lot to pull off shots. his many wedges means he has to do less manipulation.

My PW is a 48 degree Cleveland CG7 iron which is the same as my iron set. Went with 52 & 58 Cleveland 588 wedges and very happy with my gaps, etc. got the wedges reshafted the same as my irons

Similarly to the OP the PW in the G25 gets no confidence flowing. Once I put my Tour (Gorge) 52 and 58 degree wedges behind the ball I'm far happier. This has been my argument with the G25's through the bag and hence my thought of going back to the TM Tour Preferred's where the short irons were much sleeker and my dabbling with the I20/I25 (on release naturally).

I do think confidence in the short game is important especially if your technique is flaky like mine. It is a case of mind over matter but looking down on a thick G25 its a constant nag that I could do without when I'm trying to focus on the task in hand

Can you get a PW replacement in the Tour ?

Yes, my point exactly. He is a short game genius and has the ability and creativity to play more shots with fewer wedges. Leaves him more choice for other clubs throughout the bag, in his case multiple drivers

Current pw is 46* so opted for 52/58* combo, had a 60 which cost me more shots that it saved, just manipulate the club according to make either suit. Can't personally ever see me carrying 3 wedges

I just got mine of the shelf. Went MD because they had a good price and good reviews. Set has a 45 PW and matching GW was 49* so figured 48,54,60 was nice even gaps and went standard bounce because I play parkland and there was only choice of standard or low bounce.

My PW is a 46 degree Ping i15, I couldn't get the matching gap wedge so opted for the i20 50 degree GW. My other wedges are TM XFT's in 54 and 60 degree.

Basically I'm not too worried about the loft or bounce as the gapping at 115 yds, 100 yds, 85 yds and 60 yds gives me all the control I need with a 3/4 swing.

The bounce on the 54 and 60 degree wedges allow me to alter face angle to suit the shot in bunkers.

On their site they start at 47 degrees.

My wedges are 48 52 and 56. The 52 and 56 have 12 bounce. They have a slightly flatter lie too. Very much personal preference but choose the bounce based on your home course. Tight lies and little sand in bunkers suggest less bounce......
