Hi Guys,

I've recently taken up golf again after a 7 year break. I got myself a decent set of 2nd hand irons (4-PW) and seem to hitting pretty well considering posting a 97 at the weekend.

However one area i need to work on is pitching, as I 3 chipped/pitched on 2 holes and was generally rubbish around the green. I only had the PW to use so I'm looking to get a couple of wedges.

Does anyone have any recommendations? They'd have to be cheap. I saw the Dunlop TP12, are they any good or is it worth paying more straight away? I'm open to second hand from places like golf bidder?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to chat more to you all on here.

A PW is a perfectly good club to pitch\chip with, if you're 3-chipping, I'm guessing you're hitting fat or thin shots in which case I'd suggest getting a lesson. Once you can hit consistent shots with th PW, you can think about different wedges. Just my tuppence worth

We are talking about pitching a lot in here as well as chipping. Worth a read I think!

Watch bobmacs videos to help you get better, once you do you can use pretty much ANY wedge that is functional.

Nowt wrong with dunlop wedges as long as your technique is OK, sort that first unless your current wedges are not functioning correctly.

Thanks guy, I've already booked in for 4 lessons with the pro. They PW although second hand is in great condition, nothing wrong with it at all. Just when I used to play, always used a Lob wedge. I'll see if the pro will recommend stuff

Read the thread and consider using an 8 iron on a flat chip with plenty of green. The less loft, the bigger the margin for error.

As with what scienceBoy said.

Around the green as long as there is no hazard in front of me I use a 7 iron and use it like a putter.

I have actually got very good at it now and have even moved out to 20-30 yards from the hole and generally get it close enough to 1 putt.

Get around the practice greens at your club and try different approach shots.

I use Cleveland CG15's. I think they're superb and wouldn't hesitate to get some second hand ones - ebay would be fine. Might be a bit more expensive than you want though, and not sure how much they offer over some of the cheaper options.

If you pick up a Dunlop TP12 and you like the feel of it, go for it I say, feel is the most important thing with these clubs in my opinion.

I have a couple of older Vokeys (48 + 52) that could be sold for a modest sum, PM me if your interested.

Welcome by the way.

Cheap but good wedge at the above link.

I'd suggest getting adding a 56 or 54 degree wedge to your set so you have a sand wedge. Leave lob wedges alone til you have better technique. You don't want to overcomplicate things by having too many options.

Having an array of wedges isn't going to improve your short game unless you know how to use them. There's been many a duffed chip with even the best wedges. Probably even more so with more loft on the club.
