I have just bought myself some new Taylor Made Irons which came with a PW and SW.
I usually use a Vokey PW and SW but have a bit of a tendancy to dig into the ground with these and I either get more spin than the Labour party or fat the shot big style. To say my Wedge play was hit and miss was a massive understatement.
Anyway I decided to give the wedges from my new iron set a chance and have been very pleasantly surprised. I can generate just as much spin but the sole of clubs are a lot bigger so more bounce and no more fat shots.
The point to my post is that a few weeks ago a heard a few on here say it was a bit 'chad' and 'geeky' to use the wedges that come with your irons and you should buy seperate ones. At the time of ready that I agreed and loved having a couple of Vokeys in my bag but after using the wedges from the set I dont think ill be going back.
So now on please call me CHAD !! ;)

Rubbish.....if the ones in your set suit you, play with those :). Anyone who puts forward this argument is either very, very good and genuinely gets more out of tour-type wedges or they're a golf snob!!!
For goodness sake.....I have a brand new high-spin, bells and whistles GW but also use a rusty 15 y.o. SW......I couldn't give a damn....

Barney,

rguk is the Voice of Reason, again. If the wedges that come with your irons work for you, use then. If not, and you've got the £££, replace them.

The 'geeky' argument is a total non-starter. Anyone using that argument is just making themselves a huge target for a major slagging because the aim of golf is to go round in the least strokes, not with the most expensive or fashionable clubs.

The only thing I would say in defence of the previous post is that the SW I have with both my X20 and now Tour Burner is that it does look really fat and ugly compared to my X Vintage and TP wedges. They don't fill me with confidence to use them in a bunker in particular but also around the green.

That said I'm going for a short game practice session tomorrow so I'll pack the orignal SW with me and try it out and report back

Bo**ocks to who ever said that! I went out and bought an X20 gap wedge so it was exactly the same wieght feel etc as my pw and sw, I have a set of spin milled Vokeys in the corner of the room begging to be used but my standards are giving me way better results!

I agree, whoever believes that is talking rubbish.
A PW/SW are PW/SW and in almost all iron sets these clubs are more than adequate. Its all about what suits you and the way you play that gets the best out of them.

If money was no object I would have half a set of mixed clubs and the other half would probably be a few cheap clubs that work for me regardless of make.

The most accurate I have ever been with wedges was with the relatively cheap slazenger ones I have. Im breaking in a new set of wilson clubs now but I may well return to these two later. Ive had 3 or 4 additional wedges over the years, most of which have been mentioned on here from time to time, very very good and well known makes but not as good for me as those slazenger wedges from a standard set.

If they feel good for you and get you results, stick with them.

"Now always playing with a matching set some people might say you were being a little bit Anal"

I'm not going to reveal who said that a couple of weeks ago when I complained my sand iron didn't match my other clubs

:D :D :D :D ;)

I use the PW & SW from my FP's I have picked up the Cobalt 60* (which I must add is one of the best I have used) and just having my 52* changed to a 50* to make up the difference. I did hear that no matter what wedges you use for more consistant results you are best having the matching wedges, be it with your set or not, but since I only play once a week I can't see it making a difference.

That said I am looking at getting the Cobalt 56*.

The only thing wrong with a PW & Sw from a set is that there is normally too big a difference in loft so a gap wedge is often called for. Isn't it better to match the gap with the same club than go with something else that may not actually do the job that it was bought for.
For example I got a 53* & 58* Mizzy T's to go with the mp57's. I can actually it my old cally 56* further than my mizzy 53* ???? so it doesn't always pay to get different makes

I use my standard pw like most people but my irons dont come with a sw,i much prefer specialist wedges as the soles vary and i can use them for more than just standard shots,

My gf who is off 16 has cobra fp's including gap and sand wedge and finds them great for everywhere but also uses my old 56degree bladed wedge which is bent to 58 for bunker shots etc.

Each to there own on the wedge front,i see a few players carrying bladed wedges which they cant use consistantly enough to ever see benefit

I have the same problem with my vokeys and now its time i chop them in at centregolf.
i keep taking a 2 square inch bit of turf under the ball and the ball spins at 200k rpm and lands a foot in front of me. in the mean time i will put my pings back in the bag!
