What's the black shaft in my SM4s
That's feels top drawer and will lower my scores?
KBS Shaft, ya, damn right

Who is the man that gave me top advice
For the forumers man?
Shaft, can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
Shaft, right on

They say this Ethan Shaft is a bad mother
Shut your mouth
But I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft
Then we can dig it

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
Ethan Shaft

Right. I won some vouchers, sold my old lob wedge, got a generous donation from the Mrs and contributed a little myself for some SM4s. I had project x5.5 shafts in my current wedges and felt they were completely unresponsive around the greens. PM'd the wonderful Ethan who suggested I tried KBS shafts. Gave them a whirl but opted for the wedge version that I'd not tried. They arrived this week and I picked them up today. Whilst I was there I spent an hour practising with themand wow. What a difference a shaft makes.

Taking them on the course tomorrow so will do a proper review tomorrow but although the heads are quality I had Vokeys already. The difference I'm noticing is all down to the shaft. :)

Ethan you are an absolute legend  :)

In a couple of weeks, you will be back saying 'Damn that Ethan, can't hit those shafts for toffee'.

In the meantime, enjoy them!

The KBS is a nice shaft, sort of like a Project X with some feel.

i'm intrigued to see how you get on with these shafts in the long run,i have the wrong shafts in my wedges and its something i should really change.

good luck with them dude

Actually KBS means Kan't Be Shanked. They couldn't call it the more accurate CBS because there is a TV network with that name.

CBS?
Constantly Being Shanked?

Do you think the shaft in a sandwedge makes any real difference? asking because my SW def has a much lighter shaft than the irons but its only used for bunkers and around the green.

DV All I will say is that my bunker play was horrendous, awful, terrible, shocking. With these new wedges I'm already executing better shots and my confidence is growing. After today's round I have learnt two things:

1) with dedicated practice and these new wedges I think my short game will come on leaps and bounds
2) I need to get my V-Easy out (nine three putts and a four putt today :o !)

Sounds like a new game plan is needed.

Don't go for the green 'cos you are obviously leaving yourself putts that are far too long or getting yourself into trouble. Instead, lay up short of the trouble and use your new wedges to pitch/chip up stone dead leaving a one putt tap in.

Just think, drive, lay-up, chip, one putt - par golf.:lol:

LMAO!!! That's genius! :)

Are you sure it isn't the grips that are helping? They're probably not as worn as the old ones and may be actually different ones entirely.....

Maybe it's the new heads per chance....perhaps you should put the old shafts in the new heads and with the old and then the new grips and see if that turns your wedge play back to being sh*t again?

SB I understand the cynicism but in my opinion it's the shaft. My old wedges were Vokeys so the difference between the two is the amount of spin on landing. I changed my grips in April on the old wedges and have the same grips on the new ones. I use Lamkin N-Durs which wear really well so it's not the grips. What I'm feeling is a great sense ofcontrol over where the ball lands and surely that is due to the engine of the club 'the shaft'.

I respect your cynicism after all I'm the lifelong 28 handicap but I promise you that number is deceptive. It probably paints a mental image of an inept hacker. I hope that those people on the forum that have played with me will agree that I'm a better player than that number.

Whether you choose to believe me or not is down to you.

I think the shaft makes a bit of difference, but mainly in terms of feel, and to a lesser degree, spin.

Some pros use softer shafts in their wedges than in their mid-irons for feel. There are also a series of spinner shafts available for wedges, including the KBS Hi-Rev, Rifle Spinner and TT DG Spinner. These are intended to offer greater spin, especially on shorter shots. I have the TT DG Spinners in a couple of Mizuno wedges and I like them a lot.

I think that providing the shafts aren't hugely different in swing weight to the rest of the irons it doesn't make a huge difference on a shot only going 100 yards or less. Surely the whole concept of wedge play, is touch, feel and distance control and that has to be nurtured and developed rather than achieved through the shaft
