I currently carry 3 wedges in my bag of 13, 51/06, 56/10 and 60/05.

No traditional pitching wedge but I am now thinking of putting one in he bag.

I use the 51 from about 90/100 yds and my 9 iron from about 125 yds.

Any thoughts on PW loft? 45 would seem logical but what's logic got to do with this game!?

Find out the lofts of your irons and fill the gap!

9 43°
P 47°

Then I have a 52° wedge, probably should be 51° if I was trying to be spot on but really out on the course I can use half and 3/4 shots with the 9 or the PW if required. After that I have a 56° sand wedge with lots of bounce.

The G2 9 iron is 42.5 degrees, so there is a big gap between that and the 51 degree gap wedge.

In numerical terms, 46.75 degrees is exactly midway, so a 47 degree PW would fit the bill.

But the real intent is to give a club which hits the ball halfway between the 9 iron and the 51, so make sure to test it on the range or practice ground first to see it does that.

Echo Ethan here...

Distance is more important than loft but something in the 46/47 range should do it.

I almost tripped up last year, I was not getting on with my 5 wood, did not like the baloony flight i was getting with my steep swing so opted for a hybrid instead. I was not accurate enough to attack greens and it usually got up into the wind and was blown everywhere. I have a 3 iron but started looking at a TM 2h, the loft was MILES away, more like a 3 wood. Turns out my soft lofted irons match up perfectly with a TM 3h instead! So I have a 3 iron an a 3h! The distances match up really well, spaced by about 10 yards. Dropping the 60° wedge made it easy for me to slip in a 3 wood as an extra tee option. Now I have the perfect bag setup and no golf membership :*(

Always be careful when buying a single club to add to a set, its not as simple as it would seem!

Thanks Ethan, saves me job!

Thanks Scienceboy!

I will try out before I buy, thinking about a new set of irons anyway. Either the latest Pings or TM

Better to buy the irons before filling the gap with a Wedge then. The G20 9 iron is 40*! I20s might be an alternative way to go and the (46*) PW is more 'normal' than the wide soled G series so could fill the gap anyway.

Thats insane! That is my 8 iron. No wonder I am always a club different to people with new gear. I think one of the main reasons they are doing this is to sell more wedges.

First its decreasing lofts to add distance to an iron, then its dropping the 3 iron from a "set" and finally it will be the "new "47*" wedge! Wow! Sold separately of course :D

You are right of course. Easier to sneak in one club than a full set :-)

Love my G2's and if I can find a blue spot PW to match I will probably buy it regardless.

If I get a new set of irons then the G2's can be my visitor's set!

Got myself a Cleveland CG 15 46-8 PW on sale for £45 so will give that a bash or two tomorrow morning.

Hopefully it will see me through to if and when I get a new custom fit set of irons. If not then at least it didn't cost too much.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys!

Looks like its already happening, wow we are a marketers dream us club golfers.

Long gone are the days when sets were SW to 3 iron and the 3 iron actually had a 3 iron loft, not the 2 irons they are actually now :)

Soon we will need 5 wedges as the 9 iron will be the loft of a current 8 iron... those days are not far away IMO

No marketing man's dream here ScienceBoy! My irons are at least 8 years old, my woods and wedges 3/4 years old. Last club I bought before this was my putter a couple of years ago.

Felt like I needed something in between my 9 and 51 wedge so looked at the sales and got something for £45. If it works great, if not then it is the price of a night out.
