I am on the lookout for a gap/approach/lob wedge , Im playing the Callaways diablo edge set as i am a 'low 20's-mid 20's' hcp at the moment and have been trawling Ebay / Gumtree etc to find one but to no avail , my next port of call is to actually go with something more up to date. The problem i have is that there seems to be a vast assortment of degrees that call themselves g/w/l wedges. I am comfortable 100 yards with a PW and 50 yards with a SW but it really is that club in the middle that i am missing. The Diablo edge AW is actually at 49 degrees, would it make a vast difference say having a 52 or 54.

Same issue myself with my Callaway Razr X which had a 45* PW. I went with a 48* 54* 60* set up but to be honest the gaps between the 48 and 54 are quiet big which forces learning to take a little off the 48*. The 60* is also limited and can cause more problems than it's worth on a day where ball striking with short clubs might be a little off.

I'm considering a change of set up this year to 48,52,56 as my new irons (wilson ci11) also have a very strong loft PW at 44*.

I'm thinking of a gap wedge! I really like the MD Steve 58* I bought last year but thinking if something for between my TM 200 pw and sw! Not sure of the * yet though?

Ideally you need to keep a 4 or 5 degree gap between your wedges. Players with 4 wedges usually have a 4 degree difference whereas players with only 3 wedges will tend to have a 5 degree difference. Only playing with 3 wedges gives you a few more options at the other end of your set, i.e. you can add another long iron or rescue/utility club.

The sets gap would be a 50*. If you like the MD one you could try and get a matching 50* could also consider a 54* to give you a matching wedge setup with smooth 4* gaping.

I'd strongly suggest the gap/attack wedge from the set - as shown in the link. I've used those guys a lot and can recommend them highly.

Wouldn't bother with a Lob wedge for now - they can cause far more chaos than benefit! Good fun though.

And I'd question whether you are wise to use SW for pitching/chipping. The AW (GW) would do all you need and just use the SW for sand or long grass - and open it up for lobs!

wow that answers a question for me as well Foxholer.
I have a lob wedge but to be honest Ive no idea why :)
Going to get rid of it for now and just carry the 3 wedges PW 44 deg GW 49 deg and SW 55 deg
I know thats 6 deg between wedges but think I can work with that.

Completely agree with the recommendation above to go with the GW that matches your set... for a whole host of reasons. Not only should you feel more comfortable with it, the way the blade plays and reacts with the turf will be familiar and automatic, plus Callaway will have done the R&D to gap it appropriately between the PW and SW.

Lofts are only a guide; don't assume you will hit two identically lofted clubs the same distance. In answer to your question above, yes I believe a non-set-matching 52* or 54* wedge will make a vast difference... in that I don't believe you it will bridge your current gap as well as the Diablo GW would.
