I want to buy a couple of new wedges, probably a 54 and 60 degree. I have currently borrowed a well used Vokey SM5 60 and really like it ( particularly the swing weight). So i went on ebay and had a look. There are loads of Vokey wedges for sale. I can only assume the owners are replacing them. Do they really wear out that soon? Titleist say replace them after 60/70 rounds - couldn't afford that!! Or are there better alternatives out there? I realise it is a very personal choice but all comments/experience will be appreciated. Thanks.

Go with cleeveland there are deals on buying 2 at present probably about the cost of one new vokey.

That said if you are keen on titleist get yourself along to AG this weekend special titleist testing and promos in all stores

I wouldn't worry about wedges wearing out that quickly, I don't know anyone who replaces them as often as the manufacturers would want you to.

If the SM5 is still a bit pricey, the SM4 (previous model) should feel very similar to swing.

People change wedges as they do drivers and hybrids - they are looking for that magic right club that does the job for them...aome even change their irons for the same reason :)

If you don't spend hours practising wedges then it's unlikely playing rounds will wear them out any time soon.

Thanks guys for all the help. Three things I now have to do (1) Talk to my Local Pro (2) Visit AG this weekend and (3) Fit in 18 holes this afternoon - times are tough!!!!! Plus have a few beers this evening- not getting any easier!!
Will report back to this thread and update.

Vokey came top in one of the magazines comparisons for spin, and playability.

I bought Taylormade EF Tour Preferred a month ago, and I fell in love with them straight away - they are just beautiful clubs, like all Taylormade, and give you so much confidence around the greens.

They are forged heads though so will ding-up and the grooves will soften sooner. If you look after them though, they'll last a good while (maybe with an head cover ;-)). I don't think I'll buy anything but vokey in the future having used a few. The feel, weight, look and confidence I get with them is second to none.

Do you know, I could have sworn on my life that I had forged written on the hosel of my vokey. I stand corrected (and I'll go and remove the head cover from it.... :o

I think Vokey's retain their spin ability for a lot longer than Clevelands, even though I love the shape and weight of Cleveland's more. I've reluctantly had to retire my two gunmetal Clevelands after many years because they were no longer consistent in the way they controlled the ball. I'm using a couple of vokey's at the minute whilst I save up to get some new Clevelands.

Update -- Have bought 2 new wedges from my Local Pro. - 52degree and a 58 degree Vokey SM5 . Enjoyed the advice and discussion.

Good luck with them. Go out and work hard on the short game. I wouldn't worry too much about wearing the grooves out. To be honest, I find new wedges too spiny and prefer them once they have been worn in and produce a more predictable roll

What? You want worn out grooves on a wedge so that the ball rolls out? think you have a misconception of what a wedge is for Homer lol
