To what extent can your grips wear away but still stay legal?

Recently I have noticed that a 'depression' has been appearing in the left thumb position on my clubs.

Below are some sample pictures!!!

Thanks in advance.

I stand to be corrected, but the rules on grips are concerned with the design of the grips and wear and tear is just what happens.

Reason I ask is about 6 months ago my coach told me that my 8 iron grip was so worn out it was illegal as it was creating a groove for my thumb. I believe that a 'small depression' is allowed but obviously different people will have different opinions on what is fine and what is not! Looking to get new clubs in the summer so at the moment reluctant to spend money on re gripping unless absolutely necessary...

I bought a second hand driver last year with the shaft and head in great nick - but the grip had an amazing wear spot at the thumb position. It was actually worn right through the top layer !
All I could think is that the previous owner traded it in because she got blisters using it from gripping it so tight!

How hard are you gripping these clubs :O

Gamola have a selection of good grips and cheap prices. I did a full bag re-grip last year for less than a box of Pro V1's.

funkd revolution cord golf grips, 13 grips for £30, b&q for a roll of 3m double sided tape and grip solution. I even know of a few lads who use a mild washing up liquid solution to good effect

basically wear and tear during the normal course of play is only OK if -

1. it's during the stipulated round, or
2. it doesn't render the club non-conforming

in other words you can continue to use a club that's damaged during normal play even if that damage renders it non-conforming, and you can start a round with a damaged club providing the damage doesn't make it non-conforming.

in this case we need to look at the rules regarding grips.....the relevant bit would be

"The grip must be fixed to the shaft, must be straight and plain in form, must extend to the end of the shaft and must not be moulded for any part of the hands."

Significant wear such as that indicated in this post could certainly cause a problem as the Pro seems to have raised.
