Was this the best £25 I'll spend on golf this year?

I've been toying with the idea of having a lesson for a while now as I'm not 100% happy with my swing. I've been put off as I didn't want major changes but after Sunday's awful display of ball striking I decided to speak to Ali at the club and told him I just want an MOT to check the basics.

I was booked in for 415 today and got exactly what I had hoped. Nothing too technical, no major changes just a bit of a tweak to my setup. Ali said he'd always thought I looked a bit cramped so got me standing a bit further from the ball, got me lined up squarer to the target and tweaked my grip a little. I now feel like I've got room to swing again.

He didn't tell me anything I hadn't been told previously and hasn't filled my head with a million swing thoughts, just got me in a position to make my swing and left it at that, exactly what I had asked for - perfect

Can't believe I didn't do this a few months ago when I first started thinking about it. I think I'll book myself in for an MOT at the start of every season.

Nice one Hawkeye.

Jack Nicklaus used to swear by an annual check up and he turned out to be an 'OK' player!

Never liked the way our club pro teaches. Nothing wrong with what he says but somehow it has always failed to stick. I didn't even know y man was going for a lesson or I'd have mentioned my man Rhys at Downshire. Bit concerned he's picked the week of a pairs event to go tampering but I trust him to get it right on Saturday (in the rain) and carry us both

Hawkeye, 64 degree spalding wedge, gunmetal coloured is best as per my thread yesterday. Low percentage shots rock never mind lessons...

£25 for a tweak? Bargain!

:D Compared to the hundreds of pounds folk spend to get their heads filled with technical stuff they can't understand or implement and see their h'caps rise and their enjoyment of the game go down, that was £25 well spent in my book

I didn't think you were a million miles away on Saturday. Sunday you were clearly pretty close and so hopefully Ali has got it on track. I finally feel like I've turned the short game corner thanks to the combination of working on the lesson I had (before the back) and using Uncle Roberts well known training aid. Together they helped me get up and down three times on the back nine yesterday. That may not sound great but compared to recent months that represents a huge leap forward. I just need to get the swing working tomorrow night and things are looking positive. Maybe not this week, maybe not even Woburn, but its coming and coming big. This is going to be a good year

Hehe.... just seeing if you'd take the bait :D

If what you were told helps your game then it's worth every penny.

I thought you'd opted for a fade? Changed your mind then?

I had a very similar sounding experience on Saturday. Had 30 minutes on chipping and pitching. No major changes, just some tweaks. Plenty of work and practice still to be done, but I'm now hitting my wedges much better as a result and the boost in confidence has been worth every penny and then some.

Not changed my mind JO, the lesson was more to do with my irons and consistency. The fade is great when it works but has been bordering on a slice of late, it is still there but I feel like I've got more room to swing. Time will tell but I certainly feel more confident with it

Thats Homer your talking about,i thought he was your mate.
The way Homers Handicap is rising, not a great advert for the Pros being used.
I must admit im in the camp of working it out myself,it costs nothing, its a challenge
doing it,and its not difficult.

Actually it wasn't Homer I was talking about. I see Homer play regularly and can tell you if he sorts his short game his h'cap will start to fall.

How you go about improving is up to you, I would never go through a whole series of lessons again as I know I'm not a million miles away, but 30 minutes with Ali last night was more beneficial to me than several weeks trying to fix it myself.

I must learn to use the smileys.
