I suppose you could argue that if the owner had just needed a repair it would be a bit extreme, but if the owner had had the phone jailboroken for whatever reason then , while still extreme, Apple could have a case.

Though that written the phone is yours, you've paid for it, so why should apple have the right to tamper with it.

But this is not for jailbroken iPhones, this is phones that have physical repairs carried out by a third party.
It's like if you had your car repaired by an independent garage, the manufacturer realises it and stops your engine from ever working again.

It is only for repairs on the fingerprint scanner and seems a reasonable security measure especially with apple pay etc.

It looks like you have a problem if you have your screen replaced too,
This only effects Iphone 6 users, earlier models are OK

Its Apple only wanting their products serviced by authorised (read expensive) Apple repairers, one reason why I dont service Apple computers, I cant get the parts, and I cant get the software.
There are going to be hundreds of thousands of people out there who have had a new screen or other repair done by their local shop, who are now going to have unusable phones. Think this might bite Apple in the rear end

I don't see this as such a big deal tbh.

In my work we don't sell spares for our devices because a) we probably want the service revenue for ourselves but also b) we want to protect the brand and maintain high standards.

There are loads of cheap Chinese parts out there and a lot of shoddy repairers. At the end of the day it's got an Apple logo on the phone and it's not in their interest for there to be too many Apple products out there not performing well due to sub standard repairs/parts.

The detail is probably buried in the terms and conditions /EULA agreement that nobody reads when they download the updates. Otherwise I guess it's unlawful to suddenly start disabling phones.

But you do have to sell one of your children or kidneys,to pay Apple to replace a cracked screen.

If you have the right tools plus youtube, mobile phone repairs are pretty straight forward. What apple is doing is nasty.

Expect the Iphone 7 to come without a 3.5mm headphone socket.

Disgusting by Apple TBH, if this bites them in the bum then it's quite rightly deserved. They have tried for years to corner people into an apple only market with their products but this is a step to far IMO. The cost of the repair from Apple is £260 a small shop will take a fraction of that, also Apple shops are few and far between.
Don't see why they should get away with this as it's no real difference to the car market, car manufacturers aren't allowed to install anything that forces the car owner only to be able to use "ford" garages for repairs.

I've got an iPhone 5 as a work phone. It's OK but I can't see the fuss over an android phone, which I have as my personal phone.
The difference for me is that with my android phone I have more freedom with what I want to do. Apple want to tie you up in their whole mystique. I don't buy it.

Car manufacturers do, they use the warranty to make you come back. Once the warranty is finished and they have no legal obligations your free to kill yourself with poor reproduction parts.
i don't like Apple, I am not a fan... However when they get sued over a 3rd party component that was not tested to the standards and failed their requirements, you can understand their position.
Sadly we are too worried about artistic plagiarism... Engineering plagiarism is far more important. As I have already stated, standards and requirements have to be met, this is to protect the customer and comply with legislation.
