Last Sunday for the first time ever I/We walked off mid round due to playing like a bunch of morons.
To set the scene it was the final round of the Winter League, I was playing with a mate and another on a shot gun start from the 4th hole. My mate and I were part of a golf get together and subsequent piss up the previous day and were feeling worse for wear. The sun was shining with no wind, course in great nick, so big scores were on the cards. But as a 3 ball it was some of the worst golf collectively I have seen in a while, 2 due to a hangover and the other an out of form senior. So as we finished the 18th and with the prospect of playing the final 3 holes level par for a grand total of 27pts I suggested we hit the bar, the others agreed so we finished then and there. Never done it before, won't do it again, but

Am I right to feel like a dirty WHORE for not finishing?:mmm:

I have only walked off once in a competative round. I played 10 holes and then almost threw up in a bin! I staggerd back to the clubhouse feeling very ill after almost collapsing. I told the proshop I had withdrawn through illness and they said the results sheet will reflect this. Very nice, so people can see I had a good reason to pull out.

Only went and put "withdrawn through illness" to the wrong person didn't they!

I did get better quickly, a hearty lunch in the bar, a good rest in the lounge (sleep :D ) meant I was well enough to drive home. A good nights rest and I felt much better in the morning.

Never walked off in a competition an only ever walked off once during a twilight 9 holes after work.

I don't plan on doing it again soon.

Never done it. Even when playing awful in moosoon like conditions. Even one of the blokes i was with said at the 10th tee (next to clubhouse) how impressed he was that I carried on.

walked off only once after hitting a tree root and screwing up my wrist, should finish if you are able however your playing imho

If it's p*ssing down and the greens turn into a slimy mush of puddles and the ball just sticks halfway to the hole then I'm walking off. I'm not going to play on a course that isn't fit to play on... comp or not.

Whatever level of golfer you/we are, it's always good to finish the round especially when you are having the worst round of your life as it is good reading on the scoresheet for those of us that are always last place in that area!

I walked off after 9 holes once. Was playing in a weekly roll up and probably in the worst ever place in my golfing life, was something like 68 for the front nine. I don't care what anyone says, was not going to change on the back and absolutely never going to help me in any ways to have stayed and played the rest. I wouldn't inflict that sort of punishment on you so why inflict it on myself.

If you are injured, sick or are called away for an emergency, then it is Ok
Also if the course becomes unplayable,or there is lightning about they are also valid reasons

Additionally if you only have a limited time slot and owing to slow play you cant complete your round,

Anything else, bend over and prepare for a good slap

i walked off after taking 4hrs 15 mins to play 14 holes in a comp last year,i was playing well and so where the other two but i had to go to a family do and the thought of ambling around for another hour and a half filled me with despair.

we walked off on Sunday the 4th after 9 holes of constant medium to heavy rain. couldnt grip clubs, waterproofs were starting to seep through... not fun and dont care whether it was a comp or the British open, I am not playing (is that even the apt word in proper crappy conditions?) when its launching it down.

Just as I got in my car the heavens proper opened and I watched a group on the 13th tee struggling to hit their tee shots and had a wry smile on my face :)

To be perfectly honest, I couldnt give 2 hoots if anyone wanted to walk off as long as it wasnt in my group so I was left on my own to play. If you want to go in the clubhouse during a comp then fine you get a .1 anyway and you free up the course for the groups behind. Speeding up play so well done for that. If you are not enjoying it then I see no reason no point making yourself play if you dont want to as you will only end up hating the game.

I was going to say I've never walked in during a comp, even when I got hit a few years ago. However after I had that shooting pain on the 2nd the other week there was no point carrying on. I've only walked in once at Royal Ascot (including on the old course)in a social game and that was last year. Had a horror round and I wasn't much company. Got to the 14th green (18th tee is next door) and called it quits. Felt bad on the walk in but didn't regret it. I wasn't enjoying in, probably stopping others from doing so and there was no point in being there

I can't ever really remember ever walking in anywhere else except for conditions (flooded greens, lightning, failing light) although I'm wondering if I did as a youngster back at Wimbledon Common. Probably somewhere along the ling I guess but clearly didn't leave an impression on my psyche
