Wales Ope given last rights....

There's better courses than the stadium type course at Celtic Manor. Hope it isn't the death of the Wales Open.

I can see why the field this year isn't so strong a week before the RC. It's a shame as there's precious little tour golf in the UK as it is

which part of the editorial that clearly states that this year was the strongest fields for many years didn't you get?

Anyway, is this the end of the Wales Open, if not, where should it be held?

Will sponsors get behind such events if specific top players don't attend? and if they won't, is this the start of many events on these shores coming to an end?

Its the end of the welsh open as far as I know.

Terry Mathews is sick of ploughing money into an event that isnt supported by the players and the crowds have dwindled year on year despite tickets being available for a tenner if your a member of a club and order early enough, otherwise 15 if ordered two weeks or so before.

Half the problem has always been when the tournament is staged, this week is right after the Fed Ex and right before the Ryder Cup so players want a rest and I know for a couple of years it was the week before the US Open.

Its a shame as personally I love the event, watching Colsaerts on the 18th on Thursday bomb it 450 yards is something that ill never forget.

Would like to see it move to another course

Costs so much money to host an event now hence why the events go abroad where people are happy to pile loads of sponsership money into it - even if no one is in the crowds watching it

I dont know what other course could take it other than possibly the Vale, Machynnys or Royal Porthcawl.

I cant see Porthcawl taking it on as poor attendances could have an effect on them getting the open.

I think the one thing that happens here in the UK is the crowds flock to the events regardless of which tour it is

Location can play a big part. I was at the Scottish open, even on Saturday and Sunday grandstands were only 75% full and in busy spots crowds were only two deep at most along the ropes, one week later and there were more people at the open on the practice days than the Scottish got on the final day,

That would seem not to be the case! See Siren's and Oddsock's posts. Though 75% full grandstands and 2 deep behind the ropes seems pretty reasonable to me!

Timing is everything - and this isn't particularly well timed imo.

Still sad to see it disappear. Hope it is resurrected elsewhere. Porthcawl would be ideal as another build-up to The Open, but if it's punting to hold that event, then unlikely.

Royal Porthcawl had 45000 this year

Woburn had 60000

Both senior events

Even the Scottish Open had 40000

The Welsh Open sold 25000 for the 4 days

Compare that to most of the other ET events and it's a great deal more

250k for 4 days is great but work that out 10/15 a ticket, kids under 16 free, pay your appearance fee's and suddenly your paying out of your own pocket.

The Celtic Manor is firmly sold as a golfing holiday for people all around the world due to the Ryder Cup, job done as far as Mathews is concerned, why flog a dead horse.

Oh they defiantly run at a loss due to high costs

First thing - players IMO should never get appearance fees - they earn millions via sponsership as it is - if they want money from an event then earn it by playing well.

Not sure how much the ET charges as well.

The countries in Asia and Middle East are more than happy to pay the money as they get rich sponsership to fund the events regardless of the size of the crowds

Don't know where you got your figure from for the TP at Woburn. I do not think that this year's official numbers have yet been released but 2013 was a record with 23250 over the three days.

Unlikely to have seen an increase of 160%.

Also I believe Tour rules still do not permit "appearance money" although it is accepted that some organisers circumvent this by arranging for tournament sponsors to pay for top players to undertake clinics and personal appearances in the area of the tournament.

If the numbers of people actually playing the game are dwindling it is not surprising that attendance at tournaments is also suffering. The interest in the game in general is not that high at the moment.
