I am aware of joining fees but I have never herd of anyone charging a annual waiting list fee? I was looking at a club this morning and it seems that's a thing...

They describe the waiting list as short but charge the fee annually. Is this a usual thing? Anyone come across it before?

Its not the warmest first feel hu?!

At my current club I had to put £100 down to join the waiting list. It was taken off the joining fee when I got in. I think it shows intent if you are prepared to put a deposit down.

Inverness golf club has or had this, they had a 7 years waiting list at one point and charged something like £20 per year you were on the list. if you got in that came off the joining fee and if you didn't take up membership you got most of it back.

That seems fair Twire,

No Steve, got a lovely pack from them.... wish I had showed interest when I was 39 though! :D

If it comes off any later costs then it's totally fine. Helps those who really want to join get in quicker which is only good for the club.

Any non-refundable fee is very poor and should be protested as it reduces affordability and inclusivity.

We don't charge to add to the waiting list but you can pay £200 to go to the top of the list and it also gives you 10 rounds and then comes off your subs when you join

Wow, now that is a no brainer. That`s just 10 free rounds and a bump up the list.

That would have been the model used around here when waiting lists were common. Not many clubs operate a waiting list locally nowadays ;)

Some clubs do it to ensure commitment. Some people were going on several waiting lists at once, and then choosing whichever came up first. Clubs know the run rate for leavers, and then assume that they have a waiting list to cover it, and their budget, only to find that several on the waiting list have joined elsewhere...

St Andrews Links charge £150 to get on the waiting list which then comes of your first years fee.

Not very fair on the guy who gets bumped because he can't/won't stump up 200 notes though is it..?

The money comes off the subs so they will have to pay it at some point - if he can't pay the money why is he looking to join ?

Everyone who enters the waiting list gets given the option nothing is hidden. No one has complained as yet - it seems that the ones that are prepared to wait a little longer ( mainly the end of the year ).

Half have taken it up

The ones that did have joined in little bits over the last 2 months and we have just let another load join who didn't pay. With still another 20 or so on the waiting list

Nope, not at all, but he/she did have the option. Guessing everyone takes it up as its 10 rounds and its taken off the fee.
